New York Times: Nation’s Confidence Ebbs at a Steady Drip
New York Times ^ | 10/22/2014 | Peter Baker

WASHINGTON — In taking office during two overseas wars and the Great Recession, President Obama set out to restore society’s frayed faith in its public institutions, saying that the question was not whether government was too big or small, “but whether it works.” Six years later, Americans seem more dubious than ever that it really does.

With every passing week or month, it seems, some government agency or another has had a misstep or has been caught up in scandals that have deeply eroded public confidence. The Internal Revenue Service targets political groups, the Border Patrol is overwhelmed by children illegally crossing the Rio Grande, the Department of Veterans Affairs covers up poor service, and the Secret Service fails to guard the president and his White House.

Now public esteem for the long-respected Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has plummeted with the arrival of Ebola on American shores. A new CBS News poll found that only 37 percent of Americans thought the centers were doing a good job, down from 60 percent last year. In fact, of nine agencies tested, seven that were judged highly by a majority of Americans last year have now fallen below 50 percent. Only one, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was rated well by a majority, and that by just 51 percent.

The disenchantment stretches beyond individual agencies to the nation’s leadership. Heading into the last election that will directly influence his presidency, Mr. Obama remains at or near his lowest approval ratings, with his handling of various matters called into question by many voters. The only solace for him is that Congress, gripped by gridlock, is held in even lower regard, with its approval rating in single digits.

Everyone with a right mind expected this to be Jimmy-Carter-Redux on steroids - and it is.

We have two more years as well. Could get much more ugly and stupid out there.

He’s already preparing for ‘16, with opening the floodgates for Haitians, and having INS order 30M green cards, ready to go. He’s managed to do exactly what he wanted: make the USA ‘just another country,’ none of that elitist American Exceptionalism. We are now *this close* to being a 3rd World country

What ought to happen is for someone to get a huge mirror. Place it at the entrance of the Times office. With a sign having their headline on the top and another below reading “Look Who Caused It”

The attempt to create a full blown cult of personality failed -- thanks in no small part to ordinary people fighting against it on the internet.

And all of this stems from the top. Look at who bammy has placed in positions of leadership. Underqualified libs. CDC is a prime example. Nanny bloomberg's anti-coke guy.

Look who the obala czar is....biden and al gore's guy.

bammy himself had never managed anything prior to being elected, and no, running a campaign doesn't count. because we know he didn't run it.

Bottom line is inept leadership gives you these kind of results.

Heh. Race to the bottom. I read a similar "confidence in institutions" poll within the last year. There is one institution held in lower regard than Congress. That institution is the press.

Boy...they know how to spin it at the NYT to not seem as bad as the reality of it all.

The GOP can stop it. Even without the senate.

If they want to.

If Peter Baker continues putting 'big hunks of truth' in his writings, the New York Times will give him a buy-out gift with the next downsizing... Hats off to him - I wish him well... he'll need it.

I feel sorry for those who are suffering from Obama’s economy, but I’d rather have confidence and the economy continue to suffer than have an economic boom from other external factors, not when any growth would be used to fund our country’s destruction. I’m on a vacation from optional spending until the day after the 2014 election, and even then my discretionary spending will be intentionally low until the day after the 2016 election.
