Agreed. Recent military history (1914 >) offers many impressive examples of ability with the most impressive, IMO, being at the individual and small unit level.
More generally, the British/Canadian/Australian soldier has always appeared willing to "climb out of the trenches" and go forward in the face of appalling odds.
Bringing it to the present, however, there is almost certainly a recognizable point in time when a culture is likely to be overwhelmed and buried by its mistakes.
