Vanity, sort of: CDC's Recommendations for Ebola PPE probably caused those nurses to get infected

If somebody can post the CDC poster as a graphic, that would be great.

A good friend of mine saw the above poster passed out at the hospital where he works in Infection Control. He's got a Masters in Public Health and is about halfway through his PhD program. IOW, he knows his stuff.

He was utterly appalled by the CDC poster, as if followed it pretty much ensures that workers will be exposed and probably infected. It tells workers to remove gloves first, and then take off the remainder of PPE smeared with infectious body fluids with bare hands!

CDC has apparently pulled this idiotic Protocol.

Their website now says PPE recommendations will be forthcoming soon.

I hope I haven't broken too many rules with this post, but I think it's critical to get this out before the evidence disappears!

I keep harping about the overhead exam lights used to look at patients’ throat, eyes, etc. They stay fixed above the patient while he coughs, sneezes, breathes on it and the exam light is warm.

Nurses coming in may or may have not put on their gloves before adjusting the exam lights.

There is a reason why HCWs are being mowed down faster than patients’ families, and we need to isolate it NOW.

I just realized this is not a Protocol for Ebola protection. It’s a cartoon level reminder poster for generic use of PPE.

Some idiot made the decision to post it on their website under Ebola PPE, and then emailed it to hospitals earlier this week under the same name.

Somebody should be fired. and possibly prosecuted.

Since this was up on the CDC website as an Ebola Protocol on or before September 9, this is probably what the poor nurses in Dallas used, under the wildly mistaken notion that it was good advice.

I’m so mad I don’t know whether to puke or go blind.

There are a lot of nurse on FR. We need to get the proper protocols for them to follow.

That’s the one. Thanks for putting it up.

It’s not bad for very light duty PPE in non-hazardous cases. But it’s utterly inadequate for protection against advanced Ebola.

Unfortunately, it was up on the CDC website labeled as for Ebola protection for something like six weeks.

proper protocol for fr nurses should be to call in sick if they are assigned to ebola patient...before they get sick

Good post. The report I saw on CNN about the procedure used in the Texas hospital was FAR from that level.

Yep. Far from that level. Exposed skin. No formal decon. A tragedy in the making, and horror to come.

I am basing our what to do when shtf protocol on what I saw in that video.

The Ebola virus is easy to kill. The problem is you have to kill 100%.

3% acetic acid which is about 1 and 1/2 parts vinegar and 1 part water kills it in less than 10 minutes. So does 10% household bleach in water. Dettol was widely used in Nigeria to get it under control, and eliminate it. I have seen nothing on the OTC hand sanitizers, but I assume they kill it too. Problem is touching eyes, nose, mouth, and other orifices or getting it on skin.

I have put a rubber band on my wrist and give negative feedback every time in catch myself non consciously touching my face.

This is a damned scary disease.
