A Dallas nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for a Liberian national with the virus will be transferred to a Maryland facility Thursday.

Officials confirm Nina Pham, who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan before his death on October 8, will be treated at the National Institutes of Health’s biocontainment facility in Bethesda, Maryland.

At Wednesday's House subcommittee hearing on the Ebola response in the U.S., Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases said that Pham is being moved because the NIH facility is state-of-the-art and that Pham's condition is stable and had not deteriorated.

The NIH facility has one of four biocontainment units in the United States.

"The nurse is being admitted to the Special Clinical Studies Unit of the NIH Clinical Center at the request of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. She will receive state-of-the-art care in this high-level containment facility, which is one of a small number of such facilities in the United States," NIH said in a statement.

"said that Pham is being moved because the NIH facility is state-of-the-art and that Pham's condition is stable and had not deteriorated. "

Then why move?

If they look like they may survive, their blood serum becomes gold.

Just sayin.

Well, maybe she needs to be moved to make room for “others”?

No. They just need to not be split a million directions. They want to focus on the potential cases, on monitoring that long list of heath care workers. Keep in mind many of their critical care workers are under quarantine. Now perhaps they could treat Nina since she already has it, but I am sure it would be difficult emotionally for them to do that. And how do they travel to and from under quarantine. No, transferring Nina does make sense. Their available staff has to be greatly reduced at this time.

They're going to have to rename that government shuttle plane the Ebola Gay. (Hat tip to RUSH caller.)

Why did this take so long? The other nurse went straight to Emory.

the dallas hospital has “lost” a slew of caregivers to voluntary quarantine, haven’t they? so probably best to ship the patients out to specialized centers.

Can’t believe there haven’t been other threads about this? I heard mention of it this morning.

One possible translation: Texas' best state of the art hospital can't treat TWO Ebola patients at the same time!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I don’t think we had a thread on Nam Pham’s boyfriend, who is apparently still isolated somewhere. He works for Alcon, a pharmaceutical company.

I’ve seen him mentioned here and there, not very much. Apparently news of him is being “managed” by Alcon. (I buy their xlnt eye drops). I don’t know whether the bf has exhibited any ebola symptoms. Hope not.

Emory can only treat three patients. They have one so Pham was sent to Bethesda. We are not ready for this is an understatement.
