Colombia is closing its borders down to people traveling from Ebola-affected countries. The Latin American nation announced the decision made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs despite the fact no Colombian Ebola cases have been reported.
The border shut down doesn’t mean people can’t return to Colombia if they have been visiting West Africa; what it means is that strict detainment protocols will be enacted for individuals under suspicion of having contact with the virus. These restriction methods include an epidemiological questionnaire developed by the National Health Institues to be used by Colombian consulates during the visa application process, as well as detainment in medical observation for as long as deemed appropriate.

“The cases are not suspicious. They are simply people who travelled to places where Ebola is present. That is the reason for their medical observation” insisted the vice Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz in a press conference.
“The three cases are not under strict surveillance. Their temperature is measured two times a day for 21 days. At this moment, we are not alerted or worried. The individuals seem healthy. Two of them already completed their observation period” added the Minister of Health, Alejandro Gaviria.

The perfect storm is when Ebola gets into Mexico and Central America. Poor health care and a backward population will allow the disease to spread quickly. Where will these people go for help? Take a guess. The “Death Train” will take on a whole new meaning. Our government can’t or wont stop this.
