Here is something you don’t see every day, a satellite image showing a sizable amount of snow cover on the big island of Hawaii.

While snowfall on the big island is nothing new, commonly seen on the mountains on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, (top and bottom arrows respectively in the photo) seeing snow this early in the season on the mounatins is somewhat rare.

It is a shame the mountains are somewhat active volcanoes. Can you imagine having a ski resort in Hawaii?

I hate global warming. It causes so much cooling.

One of these days I’m gonna take an emergency trip to Hawaii and ride one of these snow capped volcanoes on one of my rock boards.

Beechen...

If you ever get to the Big Island of Hawaii, definitely take the Saddle Road across the middle of the island. That is an experience. You go from 80 degree temps to the mid 40s and then on the other side, back to the 80s. In between you get quite a change of landscape.

Some rental cars still prohibit you using that road but they've really improved it in recent years. Used to be a very dangerous road but not so bad now.

Occasionally there is a bit of skiing on Haleakala on Maui.

The helicopter ride sure was exciting. Pilot skimmed the ground on the slope, broke through the early! early morning clouds and then shazzam

the whole crater suddenly appears.

Best EEE-ticket ride ever!

Oh! The circular rainbows top and bottom in the clouds were a spectacular bonus. Too bad video cams weren’t on the market back then.

Highest speed limts to be found on the island now!

The new extension to 180 bypassed the dangerous part and it all flies now. Just watch for the cops descending into Hilo with speed limit drops going downhill.

Haleakala, yeah, I’m going there one of these days. I’m going up on a bike, not down on skis, but I’m going to do this. One day.

The usual global warming forecasts should result in an even larger demand for shovels this year.

The road you describe is, I think, the one where more than one bicyclist has died when they failed to make the corner and flew into the volcanic rocks.
