The Columbus detractors are IMNSHO Communist cadres stirring up race hate and ethnic divisions, (which are real and meaningful) for grand-tactical and operational objectives of their own. Hollywood PC 'ers hated Mel Gibson' s Apocalypto precisely because it told some unpleasant truths about pre-Columbian Mayan civilization.
