It is likely the most intense manhunt in the history of the Pennsylvania State Police, which insists it will spend every waking moment to find Eric Frein, the man they believe ambushed two of their own.
But that's not all they're spending.
Three hundred troopers a day are filling the woods in Pike and Monroe Counties in a 24-7 search for Frein that began more than a month ago.
State police say they don't have cost estimates but calculations by the Allentown Morning-Call show that PSP is spending $1.1 million a week just in added labor costs.
Throw in hundreds of other officers from several different agencies - FBI, ATF, New Jersey State Police, New York State Police - and the cost to taxpayers is closer to $1.5 million a week, the newspaper estimates.
Add in the cost to feed and lodge all these people swarming the middle of nowhere and it's even higher.
Some locals say the cost is too high. "It's gotten a little ridiculous after this amount of time," Mount Pocono's Gary Johnson told Scranton television station WNEP. "If they can't find him in this amount of time, they gotta stop spending that amount of money."
Senate staffers tell abc27 that state police have already told lawmakers it will need an additional $10 million, on top of its $221 million appropriation, to cover costs associated with the Frein manhunt.

And what if there were several thousand across the country they were looking for.
I would like to know the real story here.
The outcome of asymetric warfare: bankruptcy.
You mean like who’s helping the bad guy?
How much of this embarrassingly protracted manhunt is the difficulty of tracking a guy in the Poconos off season (in addition to the terrain, there are plenty of unoccupied/abandoned residences and stockpiled of supplies) and how much is it state police flocking to the command tents and patrolling major travel routes for overtime instead of flooding the woods and searching brush to actually find the guy? The longer it goes on, the less confident the public has in the competence of the police and the more it can inspire copycats. Probably a hunter will stumble on the guy during deer season and the media will act as if nobody cares about the wasted overtime hours.
The PSP has requested an additional $10,000,000 for this. That’s a lot of fat, overtime paychecks.
“and how much is it state police flocking to the command tents and patrolling major travel routes for overtime instead of flooding the woods and searching brush to actually find the guy?”
I think we have a winner here! You nailed it, I’ve seen it.
Just stupid. Either pull out and he will turn up or get a team of 3-4 Specop guys or someone specializing in tracking (no dogs) and just have them passively track him until they catch him.
It always amuses me when the lefties scoff at our defense of firearm ownership against a tyrannical government, saying how effective will your gun be against the full force of government.
So here is an example of an unsympathetic criminal who evades the cops for a month with a single rifle. What if it was several million armed citizens who did nothing wrong other than defend their freedom?
That’s a pretty vast area up there. Is it possible that he’s slipped out of the woods, and made his way to another part of the country? How do they know for certain that he’s still in that area? He could be anywhere.
Not much to know really...he offed a COP and wounded another. The Thin Blue Line protects their own. Its no more complex than that.
One motivated guy keeping the COPs running in circles and falling out of tree stands. You’d almost think the lot of them were incompetent. Hmmm, perhaps they are.
Eric Rudolph was on the run for five years.
Just sayin’.
The Current FReepathon Pays For The Current Quarter's Expenses?
I think we have a winner here! You nailed it, Ive seen it.
And how many of these LEO are within three years of retirement and using the overtime for this manhund to bolster their pension for the next thirty years.
I am curious too, but I think the poster might mean like:
1. Is he still out in the woods?
2. Who did he have an issue with, the PA State police or police in general.
3. Did he have an issue generally or with one or both of the people he shot?
4. Is someone helping him?
Those are just a few things that a curious observer might want to know about this story, but the American press reports little and finds out less.
I’m all for devoting resources to catch this guy. But how much overtime and how much of the police departments’ equipment wish list is built into this budget? Never let a crisis go to waste.
If the budget is increased to include the requested amount, that will become the new base-level for the budget.
Why don’t they let him give a college commencement address at the same place the other cop killer Mumia did. Since he murdered police, they would welcome him as a hero and “political dissident”.
