Holy crap. As if the powers that be know best while proving they don’t know squat.

I’m here in CT and I can hardly believe it: Malloy has actually done something I agree with.

Comparisons of an emergent disease to lifestyle choice induced reductions of lifespan is idiotic.

Jewel Mullen is Connecticut’s Commissioner of the Department of Public Health.

Despite the complete lack of a single Ebola case in Connecticut, Ms. Mullen now has been granted powers by Dan Malloy that exceed the legilative or judiciary branches of government in Connecticut. She cannot be challenged. She now has the power to implement a mass quarantine at her discretion. For example, if Dan Malloy is behind in the polls? Cancel the elections.

No, not happening. Although from what I’ve seen he’s caught up again in the polls. Perhaps this move helped him.

Not really. Just putting things into perspective maybe like the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919? Over 18 million dead?

There’s no perspective with 1918 either, unless there was someone, right when the flu got started, belittling the whole discussion by comparing the first 3 dead people from the first weeks of the flu with the dead on the second day of Gettysburg.

EVERY freakin’ pandemic/epidemic starts with ONE death.

That cartoon is particularly offensive because it manages to mock a potentially civilization rocking disease with one of the pillars of Statist personal meddling, their holy grail of lifestyle induced mortality carping...

Was must meant as a comparison with deaths in the US. If you want to really look at deaths, there have been so far over 50 million children aborted since 1973 .... perspective.

Well then, proper perspective would be to compare the death and spread rate for the first few weeks/months rather than at the beginning for the current outbreak and end result of 1918 flu.

Recall it took about 2 years for that toll to pan out, and for another perspective it took about 6 or 7 years for the Black Plague to wreak it’s havoc.

While there is a much higher level of hygiene and general medical care in the west now, you still have billions of people living in sanitary conditions approaching that of medieval Europe. That’s 2 orders of magnitude more people available for breeding virus in essentially a Black Plague sanitary environment.

This is one of those situations where finding out you’re wrong when it comes to transmission rates and other epidemiological minutia means a civilization altering event. The hardest actions to try to halt the spread are the absolute minimum that should be taken by any rational individual. The dissemination of general preventative measures and methods and means to self isolate/quarantine should be hammered into Americans heads at least as often as “safe sex” and “food pyramids” are currently.

We’re only going to have to reach a couple hundreds of thousands dead/infected [globally] before this starts to put huge pressure on already rickety economies saturated with debt and based on constant growth models.

Aside, one theory I’ve had with respect to the response to this is that the U.S. in particular has been conditioned over a couple of decades through fictional depictions of disease outbreaks to think that this is moving far slower than what a “real” outbreak would be like. People just can’t currently accept this crisis for what it is because it’s not unfolding like The Stand, Contagion, Outbreak, 28 days later, WWZ, etc.

It’s not “run around like chickens with heads cut off time”, but it’s damn well time people are educated to paying attention to this and preparing to secure themselves at least regionally.

In Africa it’s all about sanitation which zip, nada, nothing. It’s a breeding ground for all this stuff. The people are always caught between a civil war or the government.
