The construction of the nuclear power plant in Akkuyu will start next spring, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yıldız stated in a press conference on Oct. 10.
We want to break ground for the Akkuyu nuclear plant in March or April, Yıldız said, at a meeting where he also hosted Turkish students set to travel to Russia for nuclear engineering training.
The nuclear plant, which is to be located near Akkuyu in the southern province of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast, will require investment worth $22 billion, Yıldız added.
While the plants foundations will be dug in 2015, construction of its four reactors will not begin until 2016. The plant is planned to become partly operational in 2020 and fully operational in 2023, the 100-year anniversary of the Turkish Republic.
In 2011, Russian company Rosatom signed an agreement with the Turkish Energy Ministry to build and operate the nuclear power plant.
Meanwhile, Turkeys second planned nuclear plant was awarded to a Japanese-French consortium last May.
Japans Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and Itochu Corporation, with Frances GDF Suez, will build the 4,800 MW plant in the Black Sea coastal city of Sinop, at an estimated cost of $22 billion. Japan is also bidding to build a third plant.
Turkey should be kept from getting nukes. They cannot be trusted.
Daring Israel to take the plant out. This is a move for development of a “responsible” Islamic Bomb.
Turkey’s too big for the Israelis to take on, and it’s part of NATO, too boot.
Plus you have the Russians building (and operating?) it.
They know and love plausible deniability.
They’d say their presence makes it safe.
There WILL eventually be a nuclear conflagration between the islamic world and the west. You can bet the farm on it.
Don’t worry — Turkey will not be in charge of these nuclear plants.
ISIS will.
Oh thanks, I feel much better now! Nottttttttttttttttt
If Israel were to attack Turkey, Turkey could invoke Article V of the NATO Charter, which would compel NATO members, including the United States, to come to Turkey's defense.
That was one of the reasons for my noting that Turkey is in NATO.
What idiot wrote that headline?
Then remove them as a "partner" on the F-35 where they are to be final assembly on the engines which and this is only a guess prolly fall into the category of don't ask what I do for a living.... Insanity...
$22 billion? That is a bit steep for a steam generator. What else are they building? Does it go kaboom?
