British Airways is receiving pushback from multiple stakeholders after extending their stop on flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Telegraph reports that the U.K. flag carrier announced its suspension of flights to Ebola-affected countries, which was initially scheduled to last through December, will continue until March 2015.
In August, the airline first ended its weekly scheduled flights from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Lungi International Airport (FNA) in Sierra Leone, as well as all flights to Roberts International Airport (ROB) in Liberia. According to The Wall Street Journal, British Airways cancelled the flights due to the deteriorating public health situation in both countries.
Officials within the Liberian government have since expressed their concerns over British Airways plan of action. We need as many airlines coming in to this region as possible, because the cost of bringing in supplies and aid workers is becoming prohibitive, Liberias information minister, Lewis Brown, told The Telegraph. I can understand BAs initial reaction back in August, but they must remember this is a global fight now.

Commenter at link correctly says the military should be making flights into these areas.
When I hear “stakeholders” I reach for my holster.
When I hear “stakeholders” I reach for my holster.
Forget Liberia, ban flights to and from TEXAS!
If there needs to be a flight at all, I’d keep it to a bare minimum. We don’t need any more people exposed than is absolutely necessary. Dump the supplies off out front of a hanger with nobody else around, and leave.
Good for British Airways. At least someone has a clue.
So what? They can’t take criticism? Stand firm.
Perhaps Obama will convince Delta to take over those routes. Seems only fair.

I guess that’s why Britain doesn’t have any Ebola victims, while theUS is cursed with the insane idea that positive thinking will keep this deadly virus away. Exhibit A of this idiosy: Judge Clay Jenkins.
They can still get in/out via Brussels Airlines. That’s the carrier Duncan flew out on. From Robertsfield Monrovia to Brussels. And thence to anywhere he wanted.
this will end when the first airline worker or crew member comes down with ebola
then the airline workers themselves will do what governments are too PC to do
I wouldn’t let healthy people in the impacted countries leave. Train them to deal with the crisis. It’s not like they would provide any military assistance if the US needed it and our troops were quarantined.
“Aid organizations dedicated to international relief have joined Liberian officials in speaking out against the carriers decision. The organizations argue that reducing the number flights into the Ebola-affected countries limits the number of opportunities to transport supplies, medicine and relief workers necessary for handling the outbreak.”
I guess the question becomes: How many Westerners have to die, before we stop reading CRAP LIKE THIS.
For starters, there are things known as CARGO PLANES and it’s a hell of a lot more efficient to use them to transport supplies and medicines than passenger planes.
Second, for aid workers, you can still fly them in and out, with the right precautions, like forced-quarantining, no exceptions. What is NOT HELPING is having 150 Liberan civilians fanning out in the United States every day (or whatever the number is), trying to get away from that disease before it catches up to them.
whats wrong with the military parachuting food and supplies into these areas ???
there are already thousands of aid workers and medical personal in the countries..
Actually, if I’m remembering correctly, the reason BA and AirFrance stopped flying to Monrovia was a general strike threat by their unions.
I can certainly see their point. IF you’re a worker on one of those flights and you become sick or injured during your turnaround there and in need of hospitalization, in Monrovia you would of necessity have to be taken to a hospital loaded with ebola. Shockingly enough, the unions stomped their feet and said no.
I’m not surprised that Brussels Airlines continues to fly there however. The EU’s headquarters is in Brussels. That place is guaranteed to have a higher percentage than most of ‘head up a@@’ decision makers.
“Liberias information minister, Lewis Brown, told The Telegraph. I can understand BAs initial reaction back in August, but they must remember this is a global fight now.”
Sounds a lot like they want to spread the misery around. It’s almost like the idea, “If I’m poor and sick, you should be too, it’s not fair.”
“They can still get in/out via Brussels Airlines. Thats the carrier Duncan flew out on. From Robertsfield Monrovia to Brussels. And thence to anywhere he wanted.”
...and we can still DENY ENTRY for ANY REASON, if we choose so. Or we can quarantine. And yes, we do know EVERY COUNTRY that a person has visited when outside of the US, the information is linked through international databases.
Now, entering illegally through the Southern Border is still possible, but it is quite challenging and I’m not sure the cartels want to be escorting too many people from that part of the world.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Remember that middle aged Hispanic Vet (allegedly with PTSD)
who ran unencumbered into the White House Kitchen last month?
Would’nt it be ‘funny’ if he suddenly tested as positive for Ebola? Oh Dear! Where would Obama go to conduct business then? Of course with Obama, he’s on the Golf Course or fund raising 80% of his time anyway. Obama tends to get ‘cabin fever’ when he has to stay put at the big house for too long.
I’d have to know a bit more about your idea, but I lean very heavily toward closing borders here. Letting this spread outward is just insanity to my way of thinking.
Let it burn itself out in the infected nations.
Dump off supplies at a place at the airport where everyone has been removed. Then leave.
