Only one thing can save us from Labour: A Tory split
MailOnline ^ | 10/11/2014 | Peter Hitchens

The Prime Minister likes to scare us by warning 'Go to bed with Nigel Farage, wake up with Red Ed'. But, Mr. Cameron, most of us have been through a worse nightmare than that.

To use your own rather tacky imagery, they went to bed in 2010 with an apparently conservative, pro-British Tory leader-and woke up in the morning to find it was all just thick make-up, and that you were a fervent Europhile, a politically correct sexual revolutionary and a Green fanatic.

Let's have no more mornings like that. Those Tory voters and Tory MP's who fear a Labour victory next year have a real, practical answer to both these fears. Here it is.

Ukip has shown it can beat Labour in the North of England, where the Tories cannot. Ukip has shown it can energise patriotic, socially conservative voters in the South.

If a large number of Tory MP's now defect to Ukip-as many must be tempted to do-Ukip can be transformed in a few weeks into a real third party which can thrash Ed Miliband in seats he would otherwise win.

I believe this could create the crisis that Nigel Farage needs and hopes for-the possibility of a workable, hard-nosed post-election pact between the Tories and Ukip, an unequivocal deal to take us out of the EU and give us back control over our borders.......

The only way for the UK to not have a Labour government next year is for Conservatives to join UKIP and take the fight to Labour which almost lost to UKIP in one of its safe seats (617 vote difference) last Thursday.

Nigel Farage is my president.

The English are doing bit by bit with UKIP and the Tories what we need to do to the Republican Party. Replace it.

I guess I don't know if this sort of phrasing is very common in the UK, but I have seen film of a speech by Oswald Mosley (British Fascist) from probably 1933 or so, in which is uses much the same expression to say that both political parties are in league "They always been all the same!" Mosley indicated that only the British Union of Fascists had a solution to the sclerosis.

UKIP can win seats in Wales and Scotland. The Tories can’t.

The Tories kid themselves by holding the only way the party can survive is to be less repulsive than Labour.

It won’t work. People will vote Labour because it stands for something. The Tories no longer represent the traditional conservative values of England.

Later in the column, Hitchens compares the attitude of the Cameron’s “Conservatives” to that of East German Communists in 1953 who were “furious and resentful” that the people had risen up against them in the streets.
