First UK volunteer gets experimental GSK Ebola shot in trial (100% Successful in primate trial)

The first volunteer in a fast-tracked British safety trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline received the injection on Wednesday, trial organisers said.

The candidate Ebola vaccine, which GSK co-developed with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, has also been given to 10 volunteers taking part in a similar separate trial in the United States, and so far there were no signs of any serious adverse reactions, doctors said.

The vaccine being tested in the UK is designed to specifically target the Zaire strain of Ebola, the one circulating in the West Africa epidemic, the worst Ebola outbreak recorded.

Since the shot contains no infectious Ebola virus material, only one of its genes, experts say there are no concerns that any of the subjects will contract the deadly disease...

Study data from an animal trial of an Ebola vaccine similar to this one showed that it was effective for at least five weeks in lab monkeys but required boosting with an additional vaccine to extend its protection to 10 months. [All of the untreated primates died]

Caught this on Fox and Friends this morning.

According to the FOX doc, the drug was 100% successful in treating primates, and will be beginning Phase 2 trials, human testing in West Africa, this week. 10,000 doses could be ready within 6 months.

He called it "a potential game-changer."

Just wanted to share some good news. Let's hope and pray that it's effective in humans.

This is a vaccine for prevention...not like Zmapp.

I'm pretty sure Obama wants to give the big bucks to the folks that make Zmapp.

Very early on, way before Duncan and this outbreak in Africa, I read an article.

One of the scientists was a woman. She had been to the Whitehouse and was at an affair at the side of Obama. They got bucks before. I'm trying to find the article.

It's always the side effects.

I think this is a whole new concept using genetics as the base. Have no idea how it works.

I remember being with scientists years ago and they were talking about getting rid of birth defects genetically.

Good point. I guess that's why it's going to the front-line personnel first.

Some good news.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It sounds like "gene-silencing RNA" or "interference RNA". It reduces or turns off the expression of specific genes. Antiviral and cancer iRNA medications are in trials. I read an article about the success of gene-silencing pesticides that target particular species of pests like bollworm and Western corn rootworm.

So ten volunteers in the US have received the vaccine
and are then being exposed to the virus to test it?

Do they get a reduced sentence if they survive?
