Britain will struggle to keep the lights on unless the Government changes its green energy policies, the former environment secretary will warn this week.
Owen Paterson will say that the Governments plan to slash carbon emissions and rely more heavily on wind farms and other renewable energy sources is fatally flawed.
He will argue that the 2008 Climate Change Act, which ties Britain into stringent targets to reduce the use of fossil fuels, should be suspended until other countries agree to take similar measures. If they refuse, the legislation should be scrapped altogether, he will say.
The speech will be Mr Patersons first significant intervention in the green energy debate since he was sacked as environment secretary during this summers Cabinet reshuffle.
In his address, he will set out an alternative strategy that would see British homes serviced by dozens of small nuclear power stations.

How does other countries agreeing to limit carbon emissions help Britain with the issue of keeping British lights on?
Socialism is the equal sharing of misery. - tom
Britain will be making “dirty energy” cheaper and more plentiful for countries that don’t have a problem using it. Guess where the jobs will go?
I think that a few nights without heat might knock some sense into them, pronto.
What is needed is an international Sanity Party, which will push back hard against climate mumbo-jumbo and unrealistic multicultural illusions. We face extinction of our free societies if we don’t do this soon. Elites are moving in the wrong direction and so the leadership must come from the grass roots, top-down won’t happen and anyone waiting for it will wait until it’s too late.
This idea that “we will do what others do, then it’s okay to be crazy,” makes no more sense than doing it alone. No matter how many lemmings jump off a cliff, they all die.
There is very little sanity these days. However, if you look to the anglosphere you will see glimmers in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The productive class in the US has common sense but seems to lose it every November when they are asked to vote.
