Actually, I think you have that wrong. If Americans were stupid then at least we'd have an excuse for acting the way we do.
The problem is that Americans are reasonably intelligent, but we are also ignorant, ill-informed and very lazy when it comes to educating ourselves and expanding our knowledge.

A huge issue is that a lot of Americans think it’s someone else’s job to pay attention to these things. A lot of Americans think being an idiot makes you cool, for some reason. I’ll never understand it myself.
