German army has opened a Military base in Iraqi Kurdistan capital Erbil, to train the Peshmerga forces currently fighting the Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Iraq.

A close source within Peshmerga forces told BasNews that Germany army has started training Peshmerga officers on the new and developed German weapons in Kurdistan region.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the German military base opened in Binaslawa, a town in the outskirt of Erbil and that’s where the Germans will train the Kurdish forces.

“The training course is two phase, with orally and practical phases and all the Peshmerga forces have to complete both phases,” added the BasNews source.

Last month, German army received 32 Peshmerga forces to train them in Germany on the newly received German weapons.

Germany has had an active role in supporting Kurds since the IS insurgents attacking Kurdistan region.
