A Spanish nurse has contracted Ebola after treating two patients who died from the disease at a Madrid hospital, the government said Monday, in the first known case of transmission outside of Africa.

Health Minister Ana Mato said an emergency protocol had been put in place after two tests confirmed the woman had been infected with the virus, which has claimed almost 3,500 lives in west Africa this year.

"We are working to guarantee the safety of all citizens," she told a televised news conference.

The woman was part of a medical team at Madrid's La Paz-Carlos III hospital that treated two elderly Spanish missionaries who died of Ebola shortly after they were repatriated to Spain from Africa in August and September.

She began to feel ill on September 30 but did not go to hospital until Sunday complaining of a fever. SNIP---

Health authorities are trying to track down all the people she may have come in contact with since she became infected with Ebola, Madrid's primary healthcare director, Antonio Alemany, said at a news conference.

The woman treated Spanish priest Miguel Pajares, 75, who was infected with Ebola in Liberia and died on August 12, as well as Manuel Garcia Viejo, 69, who was repatriated from Sierra Leone and died on September 25.

How many times have we been told that "Modern" prevention measures in the West would insure this simply could not happen????

I heard a report on the radio the other day that a nurses association polled their members, and 80% said the hospitals they work for had not given the staff any special instructions on how to handle possible Ebola cases.

Improper space suit procedures. After 50 times you get it wrong once and you get infected mainly because you trust the suit too much get very messy.

I went to Lowe’s and Sam’s yesterday and could not tell you how many people I encountered or who they were. This tracing stuff is nothing but a joke implemented by the CDC director Frieden and his assurances are just not believable. Typical lib Dem covering up lier.

Wow, I can tell how poorly I’ve been following these stories that I had no idea that there were any in Spain being treated for Ebola. I wonder just how many places around the world that are treating Ebola...

No instructions = no lawsuits.

But if the hospital provides an instruction and something happens, it's the lawyers time. Proof that the hospital KNEW, and also proof that the instructions were wrong (because the bad thing was not prevented.) Does not matter if anyone is actually guilty. Does not matter if a drunken fool was fooling around with stuff. The hospital admin should have prevented that "something," even if it requires omniscience and omnipotence.

Unfortunately, as anyone who had ever done anything knows, the only guarantee of not making mistakes is in doing nothing at all.

It kind of destroys the bs line of how hard this thing is to get since they brought those two into the country knowing they had Ebola and the hospital I am sure used proper protection protocols for this disease.

This was not gotten from a walk in patient in the emergency room they were trying to diagnose without proper protection.

Really think this through. This thing is a lot easier to get than they are reporting.

Not completely western. There’s quite a bit of Arab, Turk, Egyptian and other heritage there.

its very clear the socialist mantra being used by the neo communist, former head of nycity health, now head of cdc, is dangerous because he has no idea how americans have contracted the disease...god will damn these slime doctors for using the logic of climate science: JUNK SCIENCE

those who got ebola don’t know how they caught it

I thought Uncle Bungle told us that the odds of transmission were “extremely low.”
