I believe one is obligated to pay state sales tax on Amazon purchases no matter what state you’re in. Some are just more zealous at collecting.

Not so. Only 23 states currently require you to pay sales tax on items purchased from Amazon.

Most states require you to pay a “use tax” on out of state purchases that will be used in state and which would not be exempt from a sales tax if bought within the state.
