Jared Goff threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns as California held on to beat Washington State 60-59 on Saturday in a game in which WSU quarterback Connor Halliday broke the NCAA passing record.
Washington State kicker Quentin Breshears attempted a 19-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining and was wide right, preserving the win for California (4-1, 2-1 Pac-12), which is enjoying its best start since 2008.
Halliday threw for 734 yards and six touchdowns for Washington State (2-4, 1-2).
Washington State has the nation's No. 1 passing attack, while Cal's is No. 8, and the teams did not disappoint, combining for 1,400 yards of offense.
Goff's 51-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Davis with 3:18 left in the game provided the winning points for California.
Halliday broke the NCAA passing yardage record for all levels, breaking the mark of 716 set by David Klingler of Houston in 1990.

Instead of depending on only the QB to win, perhaps Mike Leech should find a kicker who can make a 19 yd. field goal.
The poor kicker. 19 yards is closer than an extra point.
It’s hard to kick a field goal with both hands around your throat.
Cougars couged it again.
60-59 sounds more like basketball than football.
Snap was botched on the field goal try. Still make able. What was even better in that game were consecutive kickoff returns of 100 and 98 yards for touchdowns by Cal.
With the hashmarks in college football being so wide, kicking a 19 yd field goal is more difficult than you think due to the severe angle.
Halliday can sure throw the football, but his lack of mobility will hurt his NFL chances.
The future of WAZZU football is bright. Leach will be able to get some of the best skill people in the country to go to Pullman, especially QBs that want to play in a spread, non-read option offense.
The Wazzu and Cal basketball teams don’t score that many points.
Football has been fundamentally changed by the spread offense. In the second half Cal scored touchdowns on seven consecutive possessions. And this game was no fluke, Cal scored 49, 59, and 60 points in the last three games against FBS opponents.
High scoring games will become more an more common until they change the rules to bring defense back into balance.
Until that happens, I’m enjoying the ride!
“High scoring games will become more an more common until they change the rules to bring defense back into balance.”
They are moving in the opposite direction with the current emphasis on “protecting” offensive players.
Watched football yesterday and witnessed several players who were penalized, one ejected , for supposedly “targeting”.
That impacts the defense bigtime as a player hesitates to make the hit, fearing he will be ejected.
