Undocumented at Dartmouth, New Student Group Offers Support for Immigrants

Even in privileged circumstances — say, while studying at Dartmouth College — life as an undocumented immigrant can be frightening and uncertain .

For Oscar Cornejo, a sophomore from Illinois, it began at age 5, when his mother arranged to bring his brother and him across the border from their home in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

When asked what earned him his admission, he hesitated, not wanting to boast. He credited affirmative action and his early decision application, and ultimately, his personal statement, “which blended my migration story in a nostalgic tone to describe my love for botany (at that time!) in a poetic manner,” he said.

Dartmouth has no dedicated administrator for undocumented immigrants who are students, nor, said college spokeswoman Diana Lawrence, does it have plans to add one.

In his remarks to first-year students at this year’s convocation, Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon referenced undocumented immigrants as well.

“Welcome each other into all you do, without regard to things like gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, political persuasion. Recognize and value the rich perspectives that others bring from their experiences — undocumented students, veterans, international students, as well as students who grew up right here in New Hampshire,” he said.

Maybe Dartmouth should invite undocumented professors in to compete for faculty jobs, just to be fair!

He broke the law. He's a law-breaker: outlaw.

With the liberal attitudes these days he has been rewarded for being an outlaw...ONLY because he's a designated minority.

“When asked what earned him his admission, he hesitated,...”

Perhaps because a better qualified individual, a hard-working American citizen with the same love and aspirations, was denied admission so that he could attend?

He didn’t earn it, it was given to him.

Give them time, they probably will.

Don’t be fooled though. These elite, Ivy league schools will have a handful of these kids just for show, like a trophy on the wall. And they will probably be given slots that were reserved for other minorities in the past, who were (at least) American citizens. Regardless, the overwhelming majority of their students will continue to be over-privileged White kids and Asians.
