Pressure mounts for travel ban from West African nations

Pressure mounted Friday for a ban on travel from Ebola-stricken countries in West Africa — a step the White House and top health officials resist as counterproductive and an overreaction to the virus’ arrival in the U.S.

The potential for the virus to spread farther, in Dallas and to other U.S. cities, has amplified calls for a ban.

On Friday, a hospital in Washington put a Nigerian traveler in isolation with suspicion that he, too, is infected. Public health experts say more cases will inevitably crop up, and the White House deployed top administration officials to offer assurances to an increasingly jittery public.

“Swift action must be taken to ensure that this deadly virus does not spread inside our nation,” said Rep. Kenny Marchant, whose district includes Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan arrived Sept. 19.

Marchant, R-Coppell, called for an immediate ban on all non-Americans coming from Liberia, citing “inadequate screening” of departing passengers and the serious risk to the American public. Sen. Ted Cruz also wants to limit or halt travel from West Africa.

“It is imperative that the FAA take every available precaution in preventing additional cases from arriving in the United States,” Cruz wrote FAA administrator Michael Huerta.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has insisted that a travel ban isn’t a good idea.

“I wish we could get to zero risk by sealing off the border, but we can't. The only way we're going to get to zero risk in this country is by controlling it in Africa,” he told Fox News on Friday.

“I wish we could get to zero risk by sealing off the border, but we can’t. The only way we’re going to get to zero risk in this country is by controlling it in Africa,”

Zero risk? There is no such thing.

Quarantine all Ebola Zone countries and for good measure, every country that borders the Ebola Zone to boot.

I just figured out the plan

To control the virus at the source we send our military over to make sure the afflicted get on a plane to somewhere else

Voila! The virus is under our control!

We don’t have to stop it-just control it.

Of course.

The goverment’s solution for everything is to control it.

Damn I’m thinking like a bureaucrat now!

Enough. Enough. Enough. The Whitehouse is “confident” and thinks beefing up medical facilities here is enough. The Dear Leader said that Americans have a right to return.Yes, and we have a right to make them be medically isolated 3 weeks before returning here. Obama is pumping millions into ebola nations. Use part of that for quarantine of US returnees before reentry. No entry from the hot zones by anyone else.

WTF. Where is the travel ban and why is this threat not important enough for one?

Obama again paralyzed in his “decision” making. This is preposterous.

We should at least have an auto-quarantine period. Duh.

The US cannot stop the spread of disease just by cutting off travel from affected nations. That's certainly true. To stop the spread of disease into the US, we would have to use the troops floating around off the coast of Liberia to secure our borders.

Nobody should get in or stay in the US who's here illegally. If there's a quarantine on getting here by plane, all affected people have to do is cross our porous southern border.

Secure borders, globally, are the only way to have a chance at stopping the spread of disease. Stopping travel from affected countries is just one piece of the puzzle.

Exactly.

It's either that or he's holed up in the family quarters, deep in a dark closet in the corner, laying in a fetal position in the middle of a yellow pool of water.
