The man charged with hitting two children Thursday morning at a Wilson County bus stop and then fleeing the scene is in the U.S. illegally, according to the State Highway Patrol.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has an outstanding deportation warrant for Marcos Santiaga Bautista, authorities said. ICE considers Bautista a fugitive after he failed to attend an immigration hearing in South Carolina.
The Highway Patrol said 10-year-old German Arroyo-Correa and his 5-year-old sister, Areli Arroyo-Correa, were crossing the street in front of their Sims home when they were hit by a Ford Explorer. The school bus' stop arm was out and its caution lights were flashing, authorities said.
