MEMPHIS, Tenn. The Memphis Police Department is assigning officers to ride city buses to help control unruly juveniles after school for the next two weeks.
WREG has confirmed officers will be assigned to a MATA bus that leaves North Main and travels to American Way.
Officers will also assigned to a bus that leaves White Station and Summer, then drops kids off at Jackson and Hollywood, as well as a third bus that leaves North Main and stops at Lamar and Lowell.
One officer will be on the bus near the driver, with a second following in a squad car.
Recently there have been several incidents that have occurred on MATA buses. We are working with MATA to ensure the safety of its passengers, Director Toney Armstrong said.
WREG saw officers at the downtown station Tuesday as dozens of teens piled on to the buses.
One bus rider, who didnt want to give his name, told WREG his ride home from work can get chaotic. He shares the bus with young and old, and teens usually pile into the back and get loud.
Kids will be kids regardless. Dealing with a public bus, youre going to have young people and old people. The two dont mix, he said.
Police will guard the three routes between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for the next couple weeks.
Bennett Foster with the Memphis Bus Rider Union said hes never received complaints about out-of-control teens, but said hes seen them get rowdy. Fellow riders have come to the rescue.
At one point, an older woman got up and sat next to two of the kids and held their hands. She started talking to them like she was their grandmother, and that really got them to stop, Foster said.
Foster is worried police will rile up the bus even more.
I dont understand how putting police into a situation with young people is going to de-escalate violence. It usually makes it worse, Foster said.
WREG asked MPD and MATA about more information about the several incidents, but have yet to hear back.
MPD said it will only ride the buses temporarily until MATA can fix security issues.
Feral youth creating mayhem on buses??? After school??
Well Mr. Foster, as head of that union you should have known there were problems. What did you do to stop it ace?
Note to self: Avoid feral transportation (aka: public transportation).
And yet Obama wants us all riding it
C'mon, call them what they are. The rampant use of euphemisms to avoid offending anyone's sensibilities is getting beyond ridiculous.
“One officer will be on the bus near the driver, with a second following in a squad car.”
What? No SWAT team in a bus following the squad car?
unruly juveniles
The code word is “teens” for feral blacks kids.
Imagine police responses after Ebola spreads.
Would the "white" low density suburbs suffer most, or the high density public housing projects?
He means those zany kids in their jalopies.
Pumping fuel (virus lives up to about 21 hours on dry surfaces). Oh...and bars, nightclubs, restaurants, ski lifts, hotels, aircraft,...
And those who neglect to continue to show up at their offices and socially interact much for income purposes will lose to the competition that takes the risk.
Because it’s “not fair” that you should be able to have safe transportation when others don’t.
I’ll just stay at home and shoot anyone that tries to come up the driveway. I should be fine.
That’s the suburban spirit! ;-)
Here’s another funny one—a reply to the question in the post.
