White House huddles as ISIS advances toward Turkey

President Obama met Tuesday evening with his national security team amid reports that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was advancing toward toward the predominantly Kurdish town of Kobani on the border between Turkey and Syria.

The president and his top foreign policy aides met at the White House on Tuesday "to discuss our comprehensive strategy to counter the threat posed by [ISIS]," the administration said in a statement.

The meeting came as CNN reported that Turkish soldiers and tanks were massing at the border amid concerns about a flood of refugees entering the country ahead of advancing ISIS fighters. Sources told the network that ISIS fighters were within three kilometers of the northern Syria town late Monday. The Pentagon announced earlier Tuesday that U.S. airstrikes had targeted ISIS positions near Kobani as the U.S. looks to keep the terror network from advancing all the way to the Turkish border.

Separately, Britain's Royal Air Force completed its first airstrikes against ISIS targets within Iraq on Tuesday. The jets destroyed an ISIS arsenal and vehicle with a mounted machine gun in a bid to assist Kurdish troops operating in northwest Iraq.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the U.S. welcomed the first U.K. airstrikes in a post to Twitter.

But the latest round of fighting near Kobani — along with intense fighting on the outskirts of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad — has raised new questions about the efficacy of the U.S. strategy to counter ISIS.

White House senior adviser Dan Pfieffer told CNN on Tuesday that Obama has "said from the beginning, this is going to take some time."

"This is a long-term effort. We have made progress," Pfeiffer said. "The Pentagon believes the airstrikes we've taken have been effective, but it's going to take some time."

Are the Kurds between the Hammer (ISIS) and the Anvil (Turkey)? Sure sounds like it.

Doesn’t Turkey back ISIS?

My guess is that Turkey is using ISIS to clean out the Kurd’s and undesirables so they don’t have to get their hands dirty.

Heck.

Obama has our Air Force using $1.5 million dollar missiles to take out $5,000 used pick up trucks.

Yep...but I think it will backfire on them. A (hot) Turkish chick I was chasing once told me that Turkey was like the US in regards to religion. I am not sure, but if ISIS will move on Baghdad...it would have no problem moving on Istanbul IMO!

Wonder how many pounds that cost? That success could have enriched a few layabout muzzies back in the UK.

I almost have the same reaction to this as Freepers do to RINOs in Congress.

Obama is so ill equipped to do this right, that I ALMOST fear him getting more involved.

IMHO ISIS needs to be destroyed and quickly, and in the process we should Knock radical and Iranian influence completely out of Syria and Iraq. That means a zero tolerance policy for radical Islam and Iran, as enforced by us militarily, in both countries.

We should break it and own it. Because losing Iraq, Syria and Turkey to ISIS is not an option.

If you’ve really looked up the ISIS atrocities, they need to be wiped out every bit as much as the Nazis.

What is needed is close air support of the Kurdish forces. If we don’t do that pretty quick..we are looking at a complete defeat. Frankly, I don’t think Obama gives a damn.

Until they declare they want their NATO brothers to come bail them out, me thinks.

Turkey no doubt has many Muslim supports of the “Islamic State”. However, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has every reason to stop their military advance. IS would happily remove him to create an Islamic State there, where it had reigned in Turkey for 1290 years but was eliminated in the 1920s as a result of WWI.
