France's Socialist government has detailed a 21 billion-euro ($26.5 billion) cost-cutting plan, the deepest-ever spending cuts in the country's modern history.
Presenting the 2015 budget Wednesday, Finance Minister Michel Sapin said, "These spending cuts are crucial to our credibility in the eyes of the French and Europeans, they'll be fully applied."
A significant part of the savings is to be made on France's generous welfare system. The government plans to cut 3.2 billion euros from health spending, and to cut family benefits by 700 million euros.

Wasn’t it Margaret Thatcher who once said the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.
They would do much better getting rid of thousands of worthless bureaucrats. Their government is like a welfare system for upper-middle-class graduates of elite schools. These people won’t starve, let them find real jobs.
They have probably figured out that they can no longer be voted out.

Interesting that even the self-proclaimed Socialists in France have now done more than "conservative" Sarkozy EVER did to shrink government.
But we're supposed to think the Obama-loving, Isreal-hating Sarkozy was soooo wonderful because he vacationed in America or something.
Depends on if your goal is to “make socialism work” or “destroy the economy out of spite”.
We will be hearing about lots and lots of ‘youths’ burning lots and lots of cars.
