You can learn arithmetic the way they are teaching Common Core, sure.
But without getting past “having to figure out the arithmetic”, you’ll never advance to any semi to advanced mathematics.
For that, the arithmetic has to be automatic, memorized, rote.
Common Core math does teach rote memorization. My son had flash cards for addition and subtraction facts in first and second grade. He is in third grade. Guess what is still being tested? Addition facts! Every week, his class has to do five minute tests on addition facts. It is a complete waste of time for him. But he has to continue testing on math facts he mastered over a year ago. They started multiplication facts a few weeks ago. Son has already demonstrated mastery, but he can’t take the five minute drill tests on multiplication because the class continues to do addition facts. I asked the teacher why the capable students cannot move ahead, and she said the district forbids it. The solution for the teachers at our school is to pacify those students with activities on tablets or PCs in the classroom. I am more concerned with the reading tests and how convoluted they are.
We dealt with another child who was ahead of his class by giving him books to read. It did not help with his work ethic, but he does have a great vocabulary and can write entertaining stories.

Lizzie should call the EBT counselor and ask what the balance is on her SNAP card.
