Just before Election Day, thousands of Florida families who participate in prepaid college savings plans will receive refunds, or major cuts in their monthly payments, and Governor Rick Scott is not shy about taking credit for the windfall.
....political observers say the governor is well within campaign ethics boundaries....
Scott is seeking re-election...
A bipartisan higher-education package approved by the state legislature this spring slashed the annual tuition increases at state universities, eliminating them altogether for most colleges.
The reductions mean refunds totaling nearly $200 million for about 18,000 families with paid-up tuition plans purchased since 2008, when the differential tuition fee was authorized. About 22,000 families still paying on future plans will have their monthly payments reduced, at statewide savings of more than $700 million, the board calculated.

Charlie Crist is failing. Rick Scott is succeeding.
Now, perhaps, the Crist-worshiping media in Florida will be forced to cover the truth.
Another fact ignored by the Obama/Crist worshiping media in Florida: the very same year the USA's credit was DOWNGRADED by the ratings agencies (under Obama), the STATE OF FLORIDA's credit rating was UPGRADED (under Rick Scott).
The media hides the truth in an effort to support the statists Barack Hussein Obama and Suntan Charlie Green Iguana Crist.
Meanwhile, here in Tennessee enrollment in state schools is down by 5% with most of the dropouts indicating the high cost of schooling being the cause.
If a Dem gov did this we would be screaming about the political timing of this. It looks bad. Just saying.
I'm not a fan of government leveraging their functions for political purposes, but this is yet another example of the blatant bias that is subtle to the low-information voter, but screams out to those who use any cognitive skills whatsoever.
I’m sure there will be a letter accompanying the checks giving the Governor credit for this.
FINALLY.... A PUBBIE RESORTS TO A “DEMOCRAT-STYLE” TACTIC IN A CAMPAIGN!!!
I have no problem beating the Dems at their own game; about time!

Yep. As I recall, the sh*t sandwich of ObaMaoCare was rammed down America’s throat on Christmas Eve. Or was it New Year’s Eve?
actually a rat governor has done it here in NY as Cuomo has sent $350 “tax refund” due to a “budget surplus” to every family in NY...i got my check saturday and when we- the local Tea Party- sat down with a state assemblyman (rat) more than a year ago we told him this was nothing more than a vote buying scheme...so i agree with you...
Sadly our entire political system has become one giant vote buying machine. As a result, our national debt is off the charts and most likely will prove to be catastrophic. Just my humble opinion.
Notice this was approved LAST SPRING in a bipartisan vote of the Florida legislature.
If the MEDIA had been doing their jobs and letting their readers/listeners/viewers KNOW about the dynamite job Rick Scott was doing in this regard to bring together BIPARTISAN AGREEMENT on lowering the cost of education, then this would not be a “surprise” to the public.
It would be part and parcel of the way Rick Scott has been governing.
Obadiah points out, rightly I think, how the Oval Office occupant has delayed all sorts of things (amnesty, Obamacare, etc. until AFTER the elections....and we see nearly NOTHING in the mainstream media about those facts....and those actions are NOT the result of BIPARTISAN efforts to legislate).
I applaud Rick Scott for helping Florida families. Remember, these are refunds that PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY PAID INTO...this is the Florida pre-paid tuition program. This is NOT taking from a surplus of funds just sitting around.
We hear of “white guilt” all the time.
I think sometimes we tend to inflict “conservative guilt” or “Republican guilt” on ourselves when it is not necessary.
Well said.
The fact that the most Conservative guy in the race is having to buy votes should not encourage any of us.
He isn’t buying votes, he is reflecting the will of the people as expressed through the bipartisan vote of the legislature LAST SPRING.
Bipartisan.
Rick Scott and bipartisan Florida legislature are sending money BACK to Florida prepaid tuition members.
I applaud the agreement; its a political success. Its just the timing of the refund before an election that looks bad and smells of political opportunism.
My comment is more a reflection on the voters than on Scott. The majority apparently has their votes up for sale to the highest bidder. Meaning we’re all really SCROOOOOD.
