DALLAS (AP) — The first case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S. has been confirmed in a man who recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas, sending chills through the area's West African community whose leaders urged caution to prevent spreading the virus.

The unidentified man was critically ill and has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, federal health officials said Tuesday. They would not reveal his nationality or age.

Authorities have begun tracking down family, friends and anyone else who may have come in close contact with him and could be at risk. Officials said there are no other suspected cases in Texas.

Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Association of Dallas-Fort Worth, said the 10,000-strong Liberian population in North Texas is skeptical of the CDC's assurances because Ebola has ravaged their country.

"We've been telling people to try to stay away from social gatherings," Gaye said at a community meeting Tuesday evening. Large get-togethers are a prominent part of Liberian culture...................

How about one big social gathering on a cruise ship bound back to Liberia.

or some other imported African disease that’s less dangerous

Huh? Why is there a "West African community" in Texas? Is there a Texas community in West Africa?

SKEPTICAL!!!

I am confident these 10,000 will be just as co-operative as their family back in Liberia. No rocks thrown, contact tracers killed, sick members hidden by “healers” and of coures, no “Runners”.

Nope, nothings to worry about here.

A relative of the 1st guy is now being tested for Ebola. Sounds like it’s already starting to spread.

You’d basically have to take every single item in the back of the ambulance and toss it or burn it.

Simple scenario. You pick up Barney at 8AM who has a serious fever and sweats. You deliver him to the hospital. The ambulance is used nine times over the next twenty-four hours to transport various folks to local hospital. Next day, hospital says Barney has ebola.

The other nine folks probably have contacted disease, and you can figure in three weeks, that they will come down with it. The driver and crew for ambulance...they need to be immediately quarantined. Who drives the cleaned up ambulance? Maybe a back-up crew on short-rest and twenty-hour days until crew-X is back on duty.

Run this scenario through sixty communities of the US and you start to tie up resources, scare a ton of folks, and start tensions rising via news services (imagine Fox, MSNBC, and CNN pumping hourly updates on this).

Air traffic going back and forth to Africa needs to be ended for a hundred days, and some serious quarantine measures need to be posted to let folks know the intent to protect the public.

At the 21:45 mark in the 30 minute video of the CDC news conference, Maggie Fox of NBC directs Centers for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden to (even though she points out that he has been EXTREMELY CLEAR that people don't get Ebola until a patient shows symptoms) explain it AGAIN because "everybody knows the reaction in the United States has been disbelieving of this..."

"disbelieving Americans" -- you're DARN RIGHT!

My question and follow up would have been:

How many hospital workers came in contact with the patient who was presenting with symptoms on Sept 26 - the same patient that was given a prescription for antibiotics and sent home? Why didn't the staff question if he'd been in one of the countries experiencing Ebola outbreaks (the patient fit the profile and you repeatedly say that you're prepared for Ebola in the U.S. - that it is "what you do")? Because the Ebola patient could have exposed many on his Sept 26 in and out visit to the hospital in Dallas, please give us a ball park number of how many staff members, their families, along with other patients coming to the Dallas hospital on the same day (and their families) are you tracking?

Centers for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden insisted on calling the group to be followed a "handful."

I thought of that this morning. There is a significant community of African immigrants near me and I bet they are very concerned. We should have done as Britain and banned air travel from the region. Those in charge of America see fairy tails and rainbows, if they make a wish it will come true.

Cincinatus’ Wife:

I couldn’t agree more. It’s way more than a “handful” of people potentially exposed. I wrote a rather long reply to another thread explaining just how extensive it could be from the perspective of someone who works in a Texas ER. You know how the disease has spread so bad in Africa and “lack of organized and sufficient response” by officials there & by WHO is blamed? Well, this insistence that only a “handful” need to be followed will be seen as our own insufficient response.

My two 8 year old grandsons are a “handfull”.

The only thing we will be getting from major media, including FOX, is dis-information.

So far, the “experts” on FOX are claiming it cannot be spread by coughs. I would ask them if they are willing to have an Ebola patient sneeze or cough in their face. They are either ignorant or lying. Simple as that.

The headline is: “Ebola case stokes concerns for Liberians in Texas”
It should be: “Ebola case stokes Texans’ concerns over Liberians”

Before they arrived, did anybody ask Texans if they wanted a Liberian community of 10,000 people in Texas?
