Subaru and Scion beat competition with most traffic tickets
Chicago Trib ^ | 9-30-14 | Robert Duffer

Certain cars attract certain drivers.

Owners of the turbocharged all-wheel-drive Subaru WRX get more tickets than any other car, with one in every three owners reporting a traffic violation in the past three years, according to a recent study by Insurance.com.

“The fact that you have a WRX is not causing you to get a ticket,” explains Des Toups, Managing Editor of the insurance shopping site. “You are.”

Owners of the Pontiac GTO, Scion FR-S, Toyota Supra and Subaru Tribeca rounded out the top five spots. The data was based on info provided by 557,238 drivers shopping for car insurance from January 1, 2013 to July 2014. While nearly one in five owners have reported getting a ticket in the last three years, owners of the top five are ticketed at a rate much closer to one in three, despite more high-performance sports cars coming in under the radar.

“It’s not about horsepower,” Toups says. “The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R rank well below average for tickets. You can have incredibly powerful cars that are cheap to insure because they’re driven by a more mature demographic.”

I is about driver attitude.
Saw a Toyota Prius that had a fart can exhaust, racing stripe, and a sticker across the back that said “turbo”.
And yes, he drove his mousepowered vehicle like it had more guts than it did.

Love my Subaru STI.
WRX on Steroids.

Better winter traction than my old Grand Cherokee.
Faster around corners than most cars.

EVO X is better but they don’t make a hatchback.

The Scion FR-S is a rebadged Subaru BRZ with slightly different trim. The Subaru Tribeca is essentially a minivan. As a Subaru owner myself, I know that the WRX is a fast, fun car and it’s hard to keep your foot out of it. The FR-S/BRZ is a sporty car but non-turbo. I suppose I understand it because it’s a coupe and would draw a younger clientele. But a Tribeca minivan? Sounds like speedometer calibration or something.

A few of those vehicles have been out of production for a long time.

I've never received a ticket in 10 years in my old Mercedes. LOL

Must not be very hilly in your neck of the woods, lol. Those old MB diesels are great cars but acceleration is not a word I’d associate with them. Slowly gathering momentum is more like it.

I noticed that too. Esp. the VW Rabbit. I’d be surprised to see one still on the road these days.

Mine is the turbo diesel, the most powerful of the W123 models. It’s still no drag racer.

I heard those things were so heavy that they actually just stood still and let the Earth spin underneath them.

Camaros, too, for some weird reason. The Chrysler 300 still leads for blacks with some money. KIA otherwise.

You’d get a ticket and an inspection order here for the tint on the driver’s side door window, within a week of arrival in town. Guaranteed.

Oh, yeah. Had a '06 WRX that I cherished through 135,000 miles. Two weeks ago I finally ran out of luck and smacked a deer on a country road. The car kept me safe but it was totaled. So I just bought a '14. World rally blue. God, it's gorgeous.

Quick, too. Not fond of the tires - Dunlops, I'll replace them at first opportunity. But the reason this car gets so many tickets is the same reason the insurance is so high - it's reasonably priced enough to be bought by kids who have no business in it. It is VERY quick, it is NOT forgiving, and the symmetrical AWD makes you think you're safe as houses when you're really chasing the edge. But I do love the car. ;-)

If I could find a well-kept later 300TD wagon in good condition for a bargain price, I’d buy it. They’ve gotten hard to find and starting to get expensive when you do.

3,582 lbs isn’t that heavy for a mid-sized sedan made of real steel. There is essentially no plastic except for the interior.

They're built like tanks and probably close to enough torque to spin the planet with the wheels, but quick they are not, lol.

Ther you have it: middle age crisis drivers drive like they are indeed middle aged. Low testosterone has effects insurance companies like, evidently.
