Hong Kong democracy protesters camped out in the centre of the global financial hub on Monday (September 29), continuing a stand-off that represents one of the biggest political challenges for Beijing since the Tiananmen Square crackdown 25 years ago.
The unrest, the worst in Hong Kong since China resumed its rule over the former British colony in 1997, sent white clouds of gas wafting among some of the world's most valuable office towers and shopping malls before riot police suddenly withdrew around lunchtime on Monday, after three nights of confrontation.
As riot police withdrew, weary protesters slept beside roads or sheltered from the sun beneath umbrellas, which have become a symbol of what some are calling the "Umbrella Revolution". As well as protecting protesters from the elements, umbrellas have also been used as flimsy shields against pepper spray.
One protester, sitting down with a group that numbered well into the hundreds at Causeway Bay, said she had been shocked at the police use of force in attempting to quell the demonstrations.
"I was there when they first started firing the first tear gas. We were all harmless people, you see here we're using umbrellas to protect ourselves," she said.
Organisers have said that as many as 80,000 people have thronged the streets after the protests flared on Friday night. No independent estimate of numbers was available.
The protests, with no single identifiable leader, bring together a mass movement of mostly young tech-savvy students who have grown up with freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China.

Russia goes on a shopping spree.
The whole theater goes into a cycle of instability.
Our economy crashes, and we go into a similar cycle.
Short answer.
What would happen if the Chicoms were to go under?
Most Chinese would turn to Zombies
I remember Stalin’s comment about voting: “What matters isn’t who votes, what matters is who counts the votes.”
The Chinese have essentially said, with regards to HK, “What matters is not which candidate you elect, but which candidates we select.”
This will not end well.............
You sure you're not talking about GOPe?
I don’t think it’ll happen, but here’s hoping that Hong Kong can get some democratic reforms out of these protests
It would be great to see an economic crash, as that might cleanse the "common facts" out of the minds of people and put them back into a reality based existence where everyone has to abide by the Law of Nature to survive. Of course, my stock portfolio will explode along with the cities in a world war. Glad to live in the corn fields....
Look for the Chinese army to invade Hong Kong by Friday.
I don’t know.
That will provoke a reaction on the markets.
You mean the contingent already in Hong Kong moving against the protesters. The fear of a Tiananmen Square-style massacre may not be far-fetched.
It works there, too.
