The hushed voice of the moderate Republican

It is depressing being a member of a vanishing breed but that is what I am. Hopefully they're not dead but hibernating like polar bears especially now that midterm elections are coming up. I refer to moderate Republicans, remember them? They've dropped out, disappeared, like senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Christine Todd Whitman, Colin Powell, John McCain (in his earlier days and probably still secretly) and others who once brought their sane wisdom to the table. But where is the next generation? Now and then there seems to be a voice in the wilderness like Neel Kashkari in California trying to unseat Gov. Jerry Brown. Democrats aren't doing much better either. They had Bill Clinton who was smart enough to veer toward the center thereby bringing us prosperity. Barack Obama swung it back far left. Will Hillary swing it back to the center?

Let's face it. Moderation in anything is not sexy, least of all in politics. It's not glamorous unless you have a Bill Clinton outsized personality that hypnotizes the opposition. In 1942, the distinguished jurist, Learned Hand, said "This much I do know -- that a society so riven that the spirit of moderation is gone, no court can save, that a society where that spirit flourishes, no court need save." Politics in a democracy is messy because it's all about compromise and achieving it takes time and spirited discourse. This is healthy as long as there is good will and at the end of the day each side has given a little, taken a little and the public benefits. We have read how normal it used to be for Congressional leaders and others of opposite parties to get together for a drink after work.

Golly Gee Carla, the moderates are still there, they're just democrats now (what they were all along).

Just in the last several years, we've seen Colin Powell endorse Obama, Richard Lugar endorse Michelle Nunn, John Warner endorse Mark Warner, moderate republicans in Kansas have become democrats, and moderate republicans have endorsed democrats for governor, senator and secretary of state, Arlen Specter became a democrat, Charlie Crist became a democrat, Lincoln Chafee became a democrat, John Huntsman is planning on running an independent campaign (probably to thwart conservatives), Lisa Murkowski ran an independent campaign to thwart a conservative, Dede Scozzafava endorsed the democrat to thwart a conservative, and on and on.

Moderate voices are being heard. WE just are not voting for them anymore...because they're democrats. And they can't get elected without US.

Carla, how much did the DNC pay you to dish out this malarkey?

Meanwhile, PSTFU.

Polar bears don't hibernate and we have far more moderate Republicans than we need.

Do you suppose that Carla thinks John Boehner and the rest of the GOPe are far right conservatives?

If so, what does she think we are?

Another one who confuses surrender with moderation.

You would think that conservatives had been running the show all these years, to hear these whiners. Right, that why there’s never yet been a snowball’s chance in hell of getting abortion repealed, or even given back to the states.

It seems they don’t want to even know conservatives exist, just to hear us raise our voices once in a while sends them into a panic and fantasies that we’re taking over. Right, that’s why Cochran sleazed his way to re-election in a very conservative state, and why conservatives are shut out, every single time, in the primaries.

No interest at all in what happened to democrats like Hubert Humphrey, San Nunn & Daniel Patrick Moynihan?

That makes the writer a liberal, not a "moderate".

Moderates are the road-kill of politics. They don’t have core principles and because of that they are like squirrels on a road running back and forth trying to decide at the last instance which way to go before that big car hits them.

People who write articles or letters to the editor like this are just plain stupid. No question. I don’t see any position that any “conservative” is taking that wasn’t a mainstream position 20 years ago. Its just that politics has moved so far to the Left and wishy-washy dopes like Powell and Lugar and McCain have gone along with it. 20 or 30 years ago, no one would have voted for gay marriage, or open borders or $1 trillion deficits. No one.

Well, once you get a president in office that does everything you ever wanted, there’s really no need to speak up.

Republicans are like the Democrats of 1970.

Democrats are like the Weather Underground of 1970.
