In heated midterm contests, GOP candidates explore a move to the middle
The Washington Post ^ | 09/21/14 | Philip Rucker and Reid Wilson

In a midterm election year in which the political climate and map of battleground states clearly favors Republicans, many GOP candidates are nevertheless embracing some Democratic priorities in an effort to win over skeptical voters.

The shift is evident in some of the most contentious Senate and gubernatorial races — in traditional swing states as well as decidedly conservative ones such as Alaska and Arkansas — where Republican nominees have endorsed increases to the minimum wage, legalizing medical marijuana or granting in-state college tuition to some illegal immigrants.

Even on social issues, an area where the GOP traditionally has hewed to the wishes of its evangelical Christian base, many Senate hopefuls have backed same-sex marriage or over-the-counter access to birth-control pills.

The article notes that this middle-of-the-road drift is not only on social issues but also in fiscal issues, too.

Seems like the GOP is working hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The EXEMPT GOP
(creators of ObamaCARE/RomneyCARE)
should discuss treason and the reason every night.

No doubt they will not, and the discussion will
be birth control pills.

The biggest myth in U.S. politics is that there is a “middle”.

And the Establishment will see absolutely no correlation between their move to the middle and their shaky positions in the polls.

Typical.

O rly? Where and when?

Never mind the WaPo thinking that selective quotes from known RINOs (never mind Islamic terrorist Grover Norquist!) constitutes “a move to the middle” en masse.

Total BS article. Clearly meant to create friction amongst establishment and tea party as Dems are about to take pounding.

Dems are running as Republicans. More like it. At least in NH.

WaPo mentions the GOP’s move to allow birth control. Really? I did not the GOP was against birth control. I thought it was against government (taxpayers) paying for it.

Total garbage article.

We're planning to move, and I am thinking seriously that I won't even bother registering to vote in our new jurisdiction.

Every race is different and some candidates are better than others. This “The GOP” BS and those who repeat it are the best weapons the democrats have.

Translation, ‘Karl Rove’s whiteboard strikes again in convincing candidates that up is down and down is up.” “Vote for us, were just like the democrats, just not as bad!!” or my favorite Karl Rove campaign slogan “we are sorry we are Republicans, vote for us out of a spirit of forgiveness!!

The ‘move to the middle’ BS hasn’t worked the last 5,000 they tried it ... why should it work NOW?

What abject morons these people are.

Total garbage article.

I understand your point, and I agree that it is intended to stir up friction... but the GOP has given them plenty of ammo to use against them. I mean, there are plenty of GOP candidates folding on social and fiscal conservative issues.

Moved to the middle?

They long ago moved to the center left.

We shall soon see how that works out.

**Nothing wins elections like lukewarm mediocrity.**

Then I think of Santorum who stood staunchly to the right, yet was defeated.

Something is very wrong with our nation. (And its voters!)

Moving to the middle worked out so well for Romney, McCain, Bush and Dole.

I agree. But with a month to go before we can send Harry Reid packing and make Obama a lame duck, now is not the time to make that fight. Plus, we are talking about a few select back benchers who are capitulating. We will still have plenty of conservatives in a GOP Majority.
