So, if Poland put troops in Ukraine and Russia ran them out or otherwise fired on them, would that invoke Article V of the NATO charter?

The problem with Russia is...the Polish/Ukranian/Lithuanian tri-powers aren’t going to defeat Russia even with Nato air support. I’m not pro-Russian by any means, but I sincerely hope this is all posturing over oil/natural gas sales. I mean, do we really want to fight Russia on their turf?

Wouldn’t that be kinda like rolling into Lincoln, Nebraska with your #1 rated college football passing attack and playing the Cornhuskers on a cold windswept day?

Might work...might not.

Good, now if only the rest of Europe would wake up faster.

The United States just finished a military exercise in Ukraine.

That would depend on whether you believe Ukraine is Russia’s “backyard.” Seriously . . . think about what you just wrote. Under what circumstance would Russia engaging in military action on the sovereign territory of another nation be justified?

I don't know why that situation would exist of NATO not joining the fight except for air, but I wouldn't bet on your outcome.

Our air capabilities against a Russian Army is incredible.

I just hope things don’t escalate and we get involved in a ground war over there...might be “Wolverines” in reverse.

How would it be wolverines in reverse when the Russians are still the invaders?

Sorry, the United States just started their exercise in Ukraine, not “finished” as I said.

“Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - US-led military exercises involving 15 countries were set to begin in Ukraine Monday, as fighting rumbles on in the restive east between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in violation of a ceasefire.”

"Under what circumstance would Russia engaging in military action on the sovereign territory of another nation be justified?"

Only if they were first attacked by that country.

And, I don't recall ever suggesting Russia was justified in attacking any country since WWII.

Do you recall me saying that?

They may not think they are.

Who might not think they are, the people they are invading?

No— just as if a US Army unit were fired on in Korea. If the Russians then attacked Poland itself, yes.

I’m sorry, I thought you were wondering if “Russia ran them out or otherwise fired on them.” Jeepers.

If it's a fight over the Ukraine they likely feel that NATO (us) inspired the whole thing and that we have no business there. I didn't mean to say that Russia will invade Poland or wherever - that is falderoll. But a fight over the Ukraine could escalate - one side gaining ground...the other gaining it back...and then you have a ground war with neither side thinking they are the "invaders"...and that's when it could get ugly.

That would be a lot of confusion to forget whether the Russians are invading you or rescuing you from yourself.

Generally speaking, an “invader” is a foreigner with the intent to occupy or control another country.
