Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said Thursday that he resigned earlier this month because he was "not true to my wife." "I was not true to my wife, after 42 years," Washington said as his wife, Gerry, sat nearby during the news conference. "I broke her trust. I'm here today to own that mistake and apologize to her, and to those I disappointed, and those who have trusted in me, and I let them down. "... Today, I'm at a very low time in my life. I'm sorry for breaking the trust that I had with my wife and for disappointing my players, for disappointing my coaches, disappointing Major League Baseball and for disappointing the Texas Rangers."

Having an affair is not a mistake. Dialing a wrong phone number is a mistake. This was a purposeful act.
42 years. Wow.
I suspect the World Series contender last year falling to be the worst team in baseball this season had something to do with it. I suspect it was a ‘you are going to resign before we fire you’ chat with management.
He may be a fine manager but he’s got some major flaws. A man his age should know better than to use drugs (2009) and he should know better than mess around on his wife.
“Yes, but confessing your sin and seeking forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian faith. Too few these days have to humility to do what he did.”
Exactly, but too many people on this board have the attitude that once someone screws up they need to be thrown out with the trash. I’ve noticed that attitude become more pervasive over the last 2-3 years. There are too many “holier than thou” types here now who are quick to judge. They forget that Jesus was all about redemption.

My dictionary defines mistake as an error in action, judgement, perception, impression, etc.
It says nothing about the act having to lack purposefulness.
Washington’s actions in having the affair clearly fall under the definition of mistake (twice over, actually, it is both an error in action and judgement).
That’s like Clinton saying that having the affair with Lewinsky was just a mistake.
Now the same team is playing much better ball after Washington’s departure...just a coincidence, I’m sure...
He never even was clear on what he did!
