The Christian legal group Liberty Institute says the university has reversed an earlier decision in which it ordered the school's football players not to display a memorial cross decal on the back of their helmets. The football players decided to include the crosses to honor Markel Owens, who was killed in a home invasion, and equipment manager Barry Weyer, who died in a car accident.
Liberty Institute calls it a "great victory for the players."

In a huge win for religious freedom, Arkansas State University conceded it made a grievous constitutional error in ordering football team players to remove a memorial sticker from their helmets.
As reported in an AFA Action Alert earlier this week, ASU authorities told players to remove the sticker because it contained a cross, flanked by the initials of two team members tragically killed in the past year.
Over 25,000 AFA supporter emails flooded the office of the president and legal counsel, urging them to abide by the constitution of the United States and stop its practice of religious discrimination.
Knowing the school was wrong, one (unnamed) player obtained the services of Liberty Institute, which fired off a letter to President Charles Welch, giving him just three days to correct the injustice or face potential legal action.
With that much backlash, it didn’t take long for ASU leaders to see the error of their ways.
The school has now issued a statement, acknowledging the right of ASU’s football players to engage in private speech, including speech in the form of a cross-shaped helmet sticker memorial to their former colleagues.

Awesome job! This is exactly what needs to be done every time these atheist lawyer BULLIES pull this garbage. Punch them right back and threaten a law suit of our own. It’s the only thing they respond to.
To force people to abandon their own religious symbols, words and practices is equivalent to forcing them to follow Atheism.
Atheism is NOT the official state religion.
That violates the First Amendment, specifically the " nor to prevent the free exercise thereof" clause.
There is no such wording as "separation of church and state" anywhere within the Constitution.
It would be interesting if ASU released the texts of the emails and content of phone calls they received.

ASU also has a gay tackle. Just wait until a suit is filed on behalf of him claiming discrimination that he can’t wear a rainbow flag decal on his helmet.
