Thousands of children in swaths of war-torn Syria, now controlled by dreaded Islamic State militants, can no longer study math or social studies under new diktats issued by the jihadists.

While sports is banned, the children will not be allowed to learn about elections and democracy.

Instead, the children will be subjected to the teachings of the radical Islamist group. And any teacher who dares to break the rules "will be punished."

...

The Sunni militant group has captured a slew of Syrian and Iraqi cities in recent months as it tries to establish a caliphate, or Islamic state, spanning Sunni parts of both countries.

Just implement Common Core and they’ll be just as screwed.

Muslims will be illiterate and technologically deficient.

But they’ll have plenty of time to worship Allah!

Works for me.

These bizarre jihadist are basically reactionaries who are unable to handle the values, institutions, scientific and social advances that constitute modernity. They are fighting a futile battle to reestablish the values, customs and even dress of the 11th century. When Obama spoke of bewildered people clinging to their guns and religion, he didn’t realize it or intend it but he was describing these Islamists.

Reading and math are pretty important to any culture. Forbidding math is rather short-sighted.

Speaking of short-sighted, there are reports that the large majority of IS dudes are carrying STD’s due to their practice of imitating Freddy Mercury round the campfire.

It’s ironic that the main keeper of mathematical knowledge in the middle ages would ban its teaching a thousand years later. (We use Arabic numerals, for example.) Why is it that some elements of Islamic history should be verboten while others are mandatory?

You mean after going to all that trouble inventing algebra and the zero, they’re not allowed to use them?

It will be interesting if banning mathematics makes some kids want to study it more.

Can not study math what a great idea.

People that can’t do math can’t; build a house or building of any kind, fix a car or a motorcycle, can’t build or repair a firearm, and definitely can’t design or build a nuclear war head.

So I think this is a great idea for ISIS.

“Gee, I thought they invented mathematics.

Back in the golden days of Islam, that the liberals keep telling us is “true Islam,” the Islamists stole foreign ideas like mathematics. At least the more intelligent among them appreciated the value of mathematics, art, etc. Now, in the golden age of Jihad, the Islamists want to ban and destroy everything they can’t comprehend, which is just about everything.

Wah?

Thought they supposedly invented algebra?

They don’t want to celebrate their so called heritage?

Fine. Dumb people make life easier for me.

I figured that the they would eventually find common ground with the liberals here.

The sad thing is that ANYBODY, including parents on THIS SITE, who think their kids will learn math in our schools might as well put their kids under the care of ISIS, as the kids will learn math here about as well. The ONLY KIDS learning math, now, are the kids who are being taught OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL, and that is still far too few.
