When Politics Drives Law Enforcement
NRO ^ | Sept 12/2014 | Hans A. von Spakovsky

One of the biggest threats to a civilized, free society occurs when prosecutors abuse their power and allow politics to drive their administration of the criminal-justice system. Two recent examples show how liberal, partisan prosecutors misused their authority and politicized justice.

After Sutter dropped or downgraded the charges, he said he did so because he agreed with their political views: “Climate change is one of the gravest crises our planet has ever faced. In my humble opinion, the political leadership on this issue has been sorely lacking.”

His arrogance seems to blind him to the fact that he is basing his prosecutorial decision purely on politics. He is also violating his duty to enforce the laws passed by the state legislature and his county government. He apparently believes that he can administer justice based on his personal political beliefs, and that he has the option of not enforcing the law against those who share those beliefs.

He's part of the new police state mentality... the one that's coming into being...

I also blame politicians who push laws that should never exist. A couple of state legislators from Detroit are pushing tougher “Loosie laws” here in Michigan to crack down on the sale of single cigarettes. Exactly the type of law that lead to a NY man dying at the hands of police.

Its a pointless law that pushes police into confrontational situations with the public and it comes about as nothing more than a means to grab revenue.

There's a bunch of those. And a lot of them are "felonies".

"when prosecutors abuse their power"

These people need to be sent to jail to send a message.
Until then, things are only going to get worse.
The republicans STILL don't understand who they opponents are.

Yep. The Michigan democrats want as much as a $5000 fine for a 3rd offense of selling single cigarettes.

You comment presumes the po-po blindly follow orders instead of prioritizing (though, I too can see the ‘path of least resistance’ in the case in point)

We already have too many B.S. ‘made up’ charging-codes. I don’t believe there’s anything We could do if ‘they’ really wanted to put us behind bars.

Very often police are called by a whiny public to deal with these minor issues.

Its legal for me to walk through downtown Ann Arbor with a rifle slung over my shoulder but if I do, police will show up because they’ll get dozens of frantic calls. (a fair number of Ann Arbor residents would outright lie and say I was threatening people to get police there faster)

One of these days, a politically motivated pre-dawn SWAT raid will result in some deaths. Such an incident could trigger a civil war. The WI John Doe law is clearly unconstitutional; it is something that the KGB, Stasi, and Nazis used. Anyone abusing power like this is nothing less than a war criminal.
I don’t care about what his wife said, Chisholm needs to be taken to the cleaners and thrown in prison next to a cop killer.

“There’s a bunch of those. And a lot of them are “felonies”. “

Remember when felony actually used to mean something? It used to be that someone with a felony conviction was someone to take seriously. Now? You could be a felon for forgetting your seat belt, just about.
Same thing with the sex offenders list. Heavily populated by eighteen year olds having sex with their still seventeen girlfriend or kids sexting. Not good, no. But that is an issue of kids and their judgement, not criminals.

This is becoming more and more common as the tobacco money starts disappearing. States want to make sure the money stream continues.

Far too many things are classified as felonies.

Then the police should be doing some return visits to ‘enlighten’ those of the wimpy stature, and prosecute those that file false reports

Of course, that would take away from the jaywalking, speed trap, etc. revenue streams

Shocked! Shocked!

I remember Andy McCarthy in NRO defending the Bushies throwing Martha Stewart in prison. James Comey parlayed that political stunt into a nice gig @ the FBI. He is a thug.

To be fair, I think most @ NRO were against that perversity as well. But, this totalitarian evil has been going on forever. Even when the USA was a free country.
