The United States said on Friday it would train Liberia's security forces to assist in isolation operations to tackle an Ebola epidemic ravaging the West African nation, after a boy was killed when soldiers opened fire on a protest last month.
The worst Ebola outbreak on record has killed more than 2,400 people in West Africa - more than half of them in Liberia. Liberian officials have called the outbreak the greatest threat to national stability since a 1989-2003 civil war.
Many in the country, founded by descendants of freed American slaves, have looked to Washington for support, as they did during the civil war, which killed nearly 250,000 people.
The U.S. government has already committed around $100 million to tackle the outbreak by providing protective equipment for healthcare workers, food, water, medical and hygiene equipment.
U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Deborah Malac told reporters in Monrovia that the United States would support Liberia both through the epidemic and beyond.
"We're committed, as President Obama has said, to see this through to the end as well to address the lingering impact, especially on the economic side, that Liberia is expected to experience as the result of this outbreak, she said.
Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf faced criticism after troops fired live rounds at a protest over a quarantine imposed in the ocean-front slum West Point in the capital. A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot.
"We're going to be training the Liberian national police and the armed forces on how they can best support isolation operations and to provide security near hospitals, holding centers and treatment units," Malac said, without providing further details.

You Ebola ? Yes . BANG ?
What are they going to do? Shoot anyone who presents symptoms?
Great! Obama wants our military troops to train Liberians to kill unruly ebola zombie mobs who try to bust out of District 9
I thought he was going to expect Americans to shoot them
Now I feel so much better
sarc
Liberian? Oh, I thought they said Librarian. Nevermind.
Question is, what do you do with people who won’t comply in an epidemic? Do you simply allow them to infect the rest of the world, or do you demand they stay in quarantined areas?
It’s a difficult situation.
What Obama really wants is to bring Ebola back to the US so he can use his State Of Emergency to take over
Subsidies.
I honestly thought this was satire. How about training Liberians in medicine to take care of their own?
Great so now a bunch of our soldiers are going to get Ebola.
And entrust the government to do it, because the government is the greediest, most corrupt and murderous force on Earth and they'll know how to do it right.
All this US government “training” is Kabuki theatre. It is the equivalent of the never-ending “training” of the unemployed for jobs. The great majority of these “trainees” never will get jobs because of crappy attitudes, drug use, general degeneracy and really not wanting to work. Essentially, government “workers” training” anyone to work is a joke. Maybe they should train themselves first. The LIB-idiots answer to anything is more “programs” and “training”.

This is military training for active duty foreign soldiers, not jobs training for welfare people in the U.S..
Is this Obama’s ‘no scrubs on the ground’ plan to dismantle and destroy Ebola? (At least to a manageable pandemic?)
Hey if you can’t kill em in Assaghanistan send em to Liberia to get Ebola.
Okay. That’s one version.
The other version goes like this.
Governments around the world allow infected people to travel anywhere they want to go. The board planes, infect travelers, those travelers go home to their communities and spread it around there. Locals who become infected go anywhere they like, and soon your spouse and children have it.
And then you blame the government for not taking action when they knew there was a threat.
Sometimes there are no easy answers.
I don’t want to see Ebola affect 1000, or 10,000 times as many people as it should have.
pResident Obola needs a reason to declare martial law. He is creating one, and you totally approve of what he is going to do about the crisis he created to not let go to waste.
The military is the appropriate agency to treat the Ebola epidemic. After all, the military has the guns and can better prevent the spread of people. Military backhoes and bulldozers could be used after the guns.
That's what the military is for.
