A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday evening after an alleged armed robbery attempt with a fake gun was thwarted by a shop owner with a real one.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, around 10:20 p.m., Fernell Pelzer allegedly entered the Walnut Convenience store on the border of the Six Corners and Old Hill neighborhoods. Delaney said Pelzer ran into the store and confronted the shop owner before attempting to pistol whip him with what turned out to be a fake gun.

A struggle ensued, according to police, and in the process, Pelzer had the tables turned on him when the store owner pulled out a real and properly licensed pistol.

Delaney said that despite Pelzer's attempt to flee at that point, the shop owner pointed the gun at him and held him in place until the police arrived.

Let’s see, good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun. How’s that possible, Bloomberg says it has never happened.

Good Gosh Almighty, what hoops did the good guy have to go through in Springfield to get a hand gun. This is from a former Pistol Permit Mass Resident. I know how tough it got...

I have some friends in the area. It seems to come down to politics, if you know someone you get a unrestricted permit, otherwise range and home only. Not sure how begin a business owner plays int it though.

A lot of it depends on where you live as well. In Amherst, of all places, the chances of getting an unrestricted license is much more likely than Springfield.

I was in the local PD office yesterday getting my permit renewed. I talked to the officer about open carry. If you are properly licensed you may open carry as long as the gun is in your control.

Go figure. I once got the cops called on me for taking a rifle out of the trunk of a car and into my house.

And, keep in mind, while the issuance is done by the local Chief...the license is valid throughout the state. So the store worker might not have had to go through the SPD.

And...I lived in that neighborhood for a short time in the early 1980’s. That is a very tough part of town.

Maybe he said “I am the only store in this neighborhood. Give me a permit or I will shut down.
Then they can walk the four blocks to YOUR store and learn to ‘enjoy’ YOUR neighborhood.’

And, unlike many a cop, the good guy managed to do it w/o killing him...

The store owner has a DUTY TO THE COMMUNITY to actually use fire the gun, and thereby take this guy out of commission before he seriously hurts/kills someone else.
