Loras Poll: King in Good Shape, Blum’s Got a Shot in the 1st CD

Newspapers and other media organizations will pay for statewide polls for presidential and gubernatorial elections, but their budgets don’t allow for congressional polling. Public polling data for congressional campaigns is hard to come by, which is why the Loras College Poll of Iowa’s four congressional districts is unique.

The latest Loras poll gives us a peek into the four congressional races in Iowa, two of which are competitive open seats. The poll shows that Iowa’s two incumbent Congressmen, Democrat Dave Loebsack and Republican Steve King, currently hold sizable leads over their challengers.

(SNIP)

Congressman Steve King is leading his Democrat challenger in the Fourth Congressional District 47 percent to 36 percent. Jim Mowrer has been running television ads for over a month now, while King has yet to run TV ads of his own. King’s 11-point lead is comforting, and King is also leading among independents.

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections; US: Iowa
KEYWORDS: king; mowrer; steve; vilsack
Mowrer is running a more liberal and more honest campaign than Christie Vilsack. Vilsack would lie and refuse to answers questions. Mowrer will admit he supports abortion and amnesty.

This same poll shows Joni Ernst, who once looked like an almost sure winner, as trailing slimy lawyer Bruce Braley.

When Ernst let her natural energy and good humor shine through, she led. Her opponent has highlighted her philosophical opposition to the likes of Medicare and renewable fuels mandates, to which Ernst has responded by backpedaling. A flood of ads claiming she does the bidding of the Koch brothers has gone almost unanswered.

And there’s a noticeable lack of ads actually attacking Braley, who has a lot to be attacked over.

It sure seems to me like Ernst is just listening too much to GOP-E advice, and naturally suffering as a result.

Poll of all Iowa Congressional races and Governor’s race.

Governor Branstad leads rat challenger Jack Hatch 56%-34%

Erst trails Braley in the Senate race 45%-41%

CD 1, Braley’s open seat is close, Rat Former State House Speaker Pat Murphy (ugh, another Pat Murphy) leads Republican Rod Blum 35%-33%.

CD 2, Rat inc. Dave Loebsack leads Republican challenger and 2010 nominee Mariannette Miller-Meeks 49%-32%. She lost to him 51%-46% in 2010 under the old lines, which were marginally more Republican.

CD-3, Republican Todd Latham’s open seat, one of a handful of vulnerable Republican seats, bad news here, Rat State Senator Staci Appel leads Republican David Young 40%-34%

CD 4, GOP inc. Steve King leads 47%-36%.

The blogger (linked article in OP) questions some of the numbers, but believes Appel definitely has the advantage as she is running an effective campaign. He also thinks these may be the only polls of the House races we’ll see before election day.
