Luis Gutierrez: 'I Lost' the Executive Amnesty Argument

On Wednesday, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) conceded that grassroots American workers who oppose executive amnesty for illegal immigrants were more persuasive than he was, ultimately forcing President Barack Obama to delay his executive amnesty until after the midterm elections.

Though Obama had said he would enact executive amnesty that could give work permits to nearly five million illegal immigrants "by the end" of summer, he decided to delay it to give Senate Democrats a better chance of retaining control of the Senate.

"I have made my argument to the President, to this White House, to his cabinet," Gutierrez said to Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC. "I lost that argument."

Gutierrez, a leading advocate for executive amnesty and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, gave Obama a wish list this spring that included granting temporary amnesty to everyone who would have qualified for a pathway to citizenship under the Senate's comprehensive amnesty bill. Gutierrez, after encouraging Obama during a White House meeting to be as broad as possible in his executive actions, said he believed Obama would go big in stopping the deportations "of our people."

Obama, however, conceded that the coverage of the illegal immigrant juveniles, nearly 90% of whom are teenagers, changed the politics of the issue. Senate Democrats, fearing they would lose control of the Senate if Obama enacted executive amnesty, also had been urging Obama not to act before the midterm elections.

Since Breitbart Texas broke the story in June of illegal immigrants being warehoused in Texas, illegal immigration has become one of the most important issues facing the country, as the mainstream media were forced to cover the issue.

A legislator, advocating that the executive authority make law on his own. Disgusting! These people abhor republican government.

Methinks he will start advocating for it again, the second Wednesday in November.

0'Chevez knows the American people , even some Democrats, are wildly against amnesty. Unemployment/under-employment is still rampant, taxes are going thru the roof, the effects of 0bamacare are only just beginning. Who in their right mind ,besides the elite crony capitalists and LaRaza would support amnesty for unskilled disease ridden people coming over here for welfare.

Louis Gutierrez makes it abundantly clear that he does not consider Americans his “people”.

Does anyone care what the American people think about this? Anyone? Hello?

It’s not you, mi hermano; the argument for unwelcome invasion is quite able to lose all on its own.

Pure BS. Gutierrez won the argument and knows it. After the midterms, Obama will give him what he and Frank Sharry want, i.e., amnesty.

Obama has implicitly admitted that his amnesty will harm the American people - you don’t delay actions that would help the country. I wonder whether Obama believes amnesty is harmful but right, or (more likely) he plans to declare amnesty specifically because it will harm Americans.

They think they live in a Democracy.

Even then it wouldn’t give precious leader a king’s power.

I believe you are correct. We are now living in the post Constitutional phase of America, and the LIV is king. All elected politicians are no different than voting for American Idol - why do you think the RATS are tinkering with state primary election laws and have wanted to abolish the Electoral College for some time now?

Wasn’t my first thought about him, but yours is at least legal. LOL

What is it with these racist bastards that feel more loyalty to someone because of their racial makeup, than they do their own fellow citizens, and nation?

His are the actions of a traitor.

Excellent point. Plus there is the threat by Hispanics to stay home in Nov. in retaliation for Obama’s treachery. As soon as that piece of info started making the rounds, it was about face for Gutierrez et al. Nov. is going to be bad enough for the Dems. When they imagine what it would be like if significant #s of Hispanics sit it out...the Night Terrors/nightmares begin in earnest.

I'll repeat that again, because it's the truth. 0bama is ready to pick a fight with a Republican Congress on the issue right out of the gate. Will Boehner and the GOP be ready to fight back?

Sure they will. I'm relearning Spanish.
