Prospect of U.S. Attacks Electrifies Syrians

The prospect of the first American attacks on Syrian soil during three years of brutal civil war electrified Syrians on Thursday, prompting intense debate over whether airstrikes on the extremist Islamic State in Iraq and Syria would help or harm President Bashar al-Assad, his armed Syrian opponents and war-weary civilians.

But even among fervent opponents of ISIS there was ambivalence over President Obama’s declaration that he would “not hesitate” to strike ISIS in Syria.

Now, framing the attack on ISIS as driven by American national security concerns, Mr. Obama faces mistrust from both sides. Many insurgents consider his action too little too late, and say his declaration that America stands with “people who fight for their own freedom” rings hollow. And the Syrian government and its supporters express suspicion that the strikes could be a cover to attack the government.

He’s going in to get rid of Assad so ISIL can take over more.

Our foreign policies are so inconsistent. Who can blame mistrust throughout the world?

Within the past five years we have had Democrats pictured in friendly meetings with Assad.

Then the administration publicly called for his ouster.

Now Obama is calling for attacks on one group within Syria's borders.

Who in their right mind would not question what is going on here?

ISIS is fighting against Assad who is aligned with Russia and Iran. If we wipeout ISIS, it helps Assad, Russia, and Iran.

The Free Syrian Army is fighting Assad and to a lesser degree ISIS. In essence, we have placed the FSA between a rock and a hard place.

Good idea!

All the members of ISIS/ISIL should be strapped into an electric chair.

The leaders and the most brutal among them should have Percy from “The Green Mile” administer the execution...

Percy would say to the most evil among them,” Oh yeah, by the way. There are no virgins waiting for you. It was all a lie.”

Wouldn't it be nice if we knew who the enemy is?? We've been arming the rebels in Syria who are more than likely part of ISIS.

In Iraq, ISIS has already mixed with the locals...

There is no end game except a major war.

Obama blew it when he removed all the troops from Iraq....It was like "Open Sesame" to the newly organized murderous muslims. They're bringing all these goups together and forming one huge force.

God help us!!

Obama wants Assad gone. That way another country falls to muslim extremism. Muslim countries CAN ONLY BE LED BY TYRANTS. WE NEED TYRANTS LIKE ASSAD, GHADDAFI, AND SADDAM. SEE WHAT HAPPENS OTHERWISE?

Nonsense. There are plenty of Muslim countries that are not led by tyrants.

Indonesia? Well, perhaps we differ on definitions of tyrants. My one difference is that any country, state or ville, being led by a muslim- is being oppressed. No doubt, no slack.
