So the Peshmerga, Iraqi Kurdistan’s army and the main force battling Islamic State militants in northern Iraq, includes female recruits. They’re media darlings—and a welcome contrast to Islamic State’s rigid subjugation of women.

The narrative of women soldiers fighting against violently misogynistic religious extremists is an appealing one. Sure enough, foreign reporters have fallen madly in love with these Pesh women.

But this celebration of the liberated Kurdish woman warrior is overblown. Kurdish society is still deeply conservative by Western standards. And almost none of these women have done any actual fighting.

Yes pretty and well motivated. Luv this quote from a woman Pesh fighter:

They came to occupy our land and raped Yezidi girls, so we have to defend our dignity and honor.

Killing Jihadi Rapists is an exampel of a “Justified Honor Killing”

I think after they capture these ISIS scum they should let Lady Pesh fighters handle the execution, because being killed by a lady takes away you chance to make into heaven if you belive in their nonsense...

Smart move for the Kurds in the long run. Like the Israelis, they are greatly outnumbered by their hostile and potentially hostile neighbors.

Half their population being women, their is a lot of potential talent for technical and administrative functions, and economy of force measures to free up more men for direct combat, even if the women are never sent to fight.

When the fight comes home however, trained, organized and equipped women can kill a lot of invaders. They are only starting a program for the females, but they have the potential to get a lot of badly needed capability out of it in the long run, and it really engenders a lot of public support when the kids are raised by moms who are themselves committed soldiers.

In the mid-term, they should probably raise a large enough cadre of female soldiers to train the rest (thousands), in the event that universal service requirements are extended to military age females in the future. Most could probably serve in reserve units or positions.
