Republican Gov. Chris Christie's administration issued a directive Monday allowing the state's casinos and racetracks to offer sports betting, a move likely to be challenged in court by sports leagues.
The governor said he took his cue from previous federal court rulings that found that nothing in New Jersey law prohibits the casinos and horse racing tracks from offering sports betting, so long as it's not sponsored or licensed by the state.
Soon afterward, one racetrack, Monmouth Park in Oceanport, said it was preparing to offer sports bets "in the very, very near future."

Casinos is a hot topic in Massachusetts and the legendary but antiquated horse track could shut its doors if not offered a casino license (this month) and many people without jobs. This is an issue that seems to cross political viewpoints. Elizabeth Warren, for instance, has come out against casinos and a repeal. The more conservative GOP candidate for governor supposedly is also against the awarding of casino licenses while the more moderate candidate is in favor. I think it is different here because Monmouth, for instance, has the reputation for being a beautiful track and generally loved by horse players. I don’t gamble on team sports or visit casinos regularly but I do enjoy horses and that sport.
I can understand why Warren would be against casinos. Being Indian, she wants her peeps to have a monopoly on the casinos.
We have dozens of casinos here in Caliphornia and we still have something like 11% unemployment statewide, even higher unemployment on the reservations, not to mention drug use, drunkenness and suicide.

It’s been banned in NJ forever, even as we had casinos. Considered too seedy I guess. But close four or five casinos in Atlantic city in the span of one year due to casinos opening all over the place and suddenly this seems like a great idea. Does this stop the bleeding? Doubtful, the new casinos that have popped up everywhere else already have this.
