Vietnam will soon have a credible naval deterrent to China in the South China Sea in the form of Kilo-class submarines from Russia, which experts say could make Beijing think twice before pushing its much smaller neighbor around in disputed waters.

A master of guerrilla warfare, Vietnam has taken possession of two of the state-of-the-art submarines and will get a third in November under a $2.6 billion deal agreed with Moscow in 2009. A final three are scheduled to be delivered within two years.

While communist parties rule both Vietnam and China and annual trade has risen to $50 billion, Hanoi has long been wary of China, especially over Beijing's claims to most of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea. Beijing's placement of an oil rig in waters claimed by Vietnam earlier this year infuriated Hanoi but the coastguard vessels it dispatched to the platform were always chased off by larger Chinese boats....

Not the best writing I've ever seen. If I understand this correctly, Vietnam is buying a total of six submarines from Russia, but I'm not sure.

I’ve run war sims with subs & aircraft vs. surface ships.

Bad news for surface ships.

The BBC just did a piece tonight about the South China Sea and the Spratley Islands. They reported that the Chicoms are basically annexing the entire sea and that there's not a damn thing that the Philippines,Vietnam and other nations in the area can do about it.

I have a bad feeling that there is going to be a big war in Asia before long with Vietnam, India the Philippines and possibly Japan lined up on one side and the PRC, North Korea, Myanmar and Pakistan on the other.

Not a good situation and most of it is China’s fault

IIRC the Vietnamese kicked the Chinese’ butts on both land and air battles in the late 70’s. Although the Chinese had the aftermath of the Cultural Devolution going against them.

.......my only recollection of any Chinese Army victories against anybody in the past 100 years was when they had a ten to one force....................like say the Marines at Chosin and I believe that was like 100 to 1 though I am not certain of that................
