At the function, Shalala joined a small group of women med students and, after routine introductions and asking if they were being treated well, Shalala quickly zeroed in on an especially attractive woman med student.
Soon, Shalala was carrying on a conversation as if she and the good-looking woman med student were the only two people present, with Shalala asking detailed biographical and personal questions. Finally, the young med student's boyfriend arrived and was introduced as such to a visibly disappointed and irked Shalala, who then asked, "So, are you two serious or just f--- buddies?" The shocked looks that ensued prompted Shalala to say that she was just joking and to hustle off in search of more available prey.
