The person is already dead, but they are keeping the organ functioning by artificially introducing oxygen tot he system.
In my aunts case they wanted to try to shrink the tumors with massive doses of radiation or chemo.
They could not do that with a "living" patient, but could legally perform these tests on the remains.

Does a DNI specify that? I Googled it but couldn't find much detailed information.
It was a nurse at the hospital that told me this and several other nurses confirmed it for me later.
the problem is that a DNR on an older person, especially an elderly one with multisystem failure, is “extraordinary treatment” and ethically optional.
However, babies are harder to predict. Unlike adults, their brains recover better, because the cells are able to grow. That is why “vegetative state” is impossible to properly diagnose in young kids, especially babies.
