Poroshenko: Ukrainians to decide on accession to NATO

KYIV, September 5 /Ukrinform/. After the necessary reforms are conducted in Ukraine and the necessary criteria are achieved, the question of the country's joining NATO will be resolved by the Ukrainian people.

Let’s not tease them, and let’s not kid ourselves. If we’re not ready to risk a major war with Russia in Russia’s back yard, admitting a member we won’t protect will eventually destroy NATO.

Full membership in NATO cannot happen until the Ukraine completes a considerable number of reforms which will bring the Ukraine in conformance with NATO standards of governance and human rights standards. Doing so will require years of effort, which will be long after the current crisis has abated. Poroshenko’s announcement serves the Ukraine’s immediate needs by making the Ukraine eligible for further assistance from the NATO alliance members in bilateral relationships and NATO partnership operations, while the Ukrainian people have the opportunity to choose membership in the alliance along with the obligations of the alliance.

There is no question that we can defend Ukraine and destroy any Russian military they send against us, which would make Russia open to all of their enemies, and if we allowed them in, then we better be willing to fight as NATO, or else it will cease to be effective.
