Silicon Valley firms were prepared this week to quickly block video of an Islamic State militant beheading an American journalist after a previous video by the same group showing the death of James Foley ricocheted through social networks in what was seen by some as a propaganda coup for the extremists.
The video Tuesday showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff was first uploaded onto a different website and quickly deleted when copied onto YouTube, slowing the spread of posts linking to it, said a Silicon Valley insider, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others all have policies banning terms of service regarding images of gratuitous violence or that incite hatred. But grisly images, once viral, are hard to restrain.
"It's been very interesting, with this second beheading, how very little of those images have been passed around," said Family Online Safety Institute CEO Stephen Balkam, who serves on Facebook's safety advisory board. "It's very difficult to find them unless you know of some darker places on the web."
When Tuesday's beheading video of Sotloff was launched so soon after Foley's death, "platforms were better prepared for it this time around," the Silicon Valley insider said. Social media firms are trying to force out the Islamic State group "platform by platform," the tech official said.
The major social networks declined to speak with The Associated Press directly about the beheading videos. But YouTube in a statement said it has "clear policies prohibiting content intended to incite violence, and we remove videos violating these policies when flagged by our users."

....are these the same libs who want to show American soldiers shooting enemy combatants to foster hatred for American war efforts?
Are these the same libs who splash video/pictures of American soldiers humiliating Islamic combatants to point out how the evil United States violates human rights?
Are these the same libs who took down video of the twin towers falling because “it’ll just breed anger”?
Are these the same libs who went into Ferguson to scream about racist cops shooting black kids?
Are these the same libs who take down pro-marriage ads/websites?
Are these the same libs who sit around bitching that freedom of speech is being eroded in the US?
Wish could type freely. Wish could discuss. Dang ... restrictions ...
all and more ... and everything else is classified.
Which restrictions where and to whom for what?
Come back during your lunch break, we’ll still be here, patiently waiting.
I’ve heard that it was being played on public displays in China.
sorry friend, but I know nothing but if everyone believes information is not classified everyone is not paying attention. I don’t care for the attention. Would be a Snowden.
Musen’t let Americans and the world see barbaric, rabid, blood thirsty Islam for what it really is. Must hide the truth concerning Islam for as long as possible so people remain blind to reality until it is too late for them to fight against it. Satan, the “god of this world”, the “Father of LIES” and his willing servants in the MSM and electronic media are not fools. They realize they must do everything within their power to keep the masses distracted with “bread and circuses” lest they wake up, see the truth, realize the real and present danger Islam and it’s followers pose to them, their families, America, Israel, the West and to everyone Islam proclaims an “infidel” and fight against it, lest they also be destroyed or subjugated by it.
If ISIS was really that bad, wouldn’t it be all over the internet?
Erasing something from the Internet is like squeezing a handful of sand.
Ditto ...
A couple of points:
Case #1 is Espionage.
Case #2 is Censorship.
Case #3 is a tough one to deal with. While by the books it's espionage, it's also a bit of whistle-blowing.
If we had a trustworthy government, I'd feel comfortable that #3 is not a big problem. But we don't.
Wow. Censorship be Silicon Valley. They know what’s best for us. Maybe they are afraid that enough people see the reality of what ISIS stands for, they might have less supporters.,and that thought really makes liberals unhappy.
Bump
they had to stop it... the previous video looked very bad for the 0ne
Censorship elements have organized. The internet no matter how flawed is better off unregulated.
Ban that truth!
Yoooo proles can’t HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!
(Ya might get mad and , like, wanna FIGHT somebody and that would be kinda raaaacist—wouldn’t it?)
Besides I’ve gotta tEe time, and—SQUIRREL!!!!LOOKITT!!!!
All true.
Videos, such as the one described, should be shown to the entire family. EVERYONE should be made to watch it.
Why? To shock everyone who watches it to fully understand that it not a Hollywood presentation and it is REAL.
Years ago I saw the beheading of a Chezina soldier on the internet and never, never forgot it. It was awful! However, it became very clear what barbaric animals these people were and the need to exterminate them was paramount in our society.
The same philosophy pertains to the Christian religion: Don’t obey God’s laws and you will roast for an eternity in hell. The same visions are in the minds of devout christians.
Why the comparison? Simple...people need to fully understand the need to “take out the trash” before the trash comes to take you out. Children should always think of these barbaric animals as the “Bogeyman” and always keep the memory of those videos in their minds as they grow up so that they will never forget what they saw and never forget to ever aid and abet them in this world.
Think of it: Why is it OK to give children graphic examples of what hell looks like but showing them what the “real life” devils look like and do is wrong?
These vids should be shown everywhere in our country.
Like photos of concentration camps should have been all over the news papers in 1939
