OSCE Representative appalled by death of Russian photographer in eastern Ukraine, calls for all killings and attacks on journalists to be investigated
VIENNA, 3 September 2014 OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović said today she was appalled to learn about the death of Russian photographer Andrei Stenin, and she urged the Ukrainian authorities to investigate the circumstances of his death.
Stenin, a photographer with the state-run Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency, was reported missing on 5 August while covering the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine (see http://www.osce.org/fom/122534). His remains were just recently discovered near Snizhne, in the Donetsk region.
Stenins death is a gruesome reminder of the ongoing and alarming situation concerning journalists safety in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Mijatović said.
The Representative has repeatedly raised the issue of attacks against members of the media in the area, including the killings of journalists Anatoliy Klyan (Russias Perviy Kanal) in the Donetsk region on 30 June, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin (Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company) on 17 June near Luhansk, and Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli and his assistant Andrey Mironov on 24 May near Sloviansk.
I call on Ukrainian authorities to investigate all killings and attacks on members of the media in Ukraine, and to do so swiftly and thoroughly, Mijatović said.
Mijatović also reiterated the call she made together with other international rapporteurs on freedom of expression on 1 September for better international protection for members of the media (see http://www.osce.org/node/123084).
The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media observes media developments in all 57 OSCE participating States. She provides early warning on violations of freedom of expression and media freedom and promotes full compliance with OSCE media freedom commitments.
Kiev junta pretended to have no information since August 5 when he was last seen alive. The truth was discovered when the area was liberated from junta's forces.
This is the key reason why this murder is ignored by MSM.
it is a perfect example how MSM filters news. Check Google news feed for Andrei Stenin. Reported only by Russian media and Spanish speking media.
U.S. media is ziplock tight about this because it shows the true nature of Kiev gansters U.S. supports.
Would it still be murder if the column Mr Stenin was traveling in was headed into Ukraine from Russia?
You have nothing smarter to say in defense of Kiev gangsters?
Deliberate killing of civilians who flee war zone is a war crime.
My comment is smart enough for such a ridiculous assertion.
"I call on Ukrainian authorities to investigate all killings and attacks on members of the media in Ukraine, and to do so swiftly and thoroughly, Mijatović said."
"Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland also condemned on Wednesday the killings of journalists in Ukraine, commenting on the confirmed death of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin. Killing reporters was inadmissible and the bloodshed had to be stopped, he said."
I guess this is also ridiculous assertion to you. ISIS butchers concur with you.
My cynicism is not directed at the dead photographer, but the propagandist dancing on his grave.
Well, that's a nice change.
I am merely stating the established facts.
Propagandists try to suppress information about this murder because it exposes the fictitious nature of their narrative.
Greasy thief Putin should start fewer wars.
So much lead flying in these designated areas, and due to the similarity of weapons/pyrotechnics used, if it would difficult to determine etiology of such weapons/pyrotechnics. And my statement cuts both ways.
You are a liar. Even the propagandistic Russian sources acknowledge the civilian vehicles were being used by the armed Russian mercenaries, which made the civilian vehicles transporting the combatants perfectly legitimate military targets. The Russian mercenaries were themselves committing war crimes with their engaging in combat without authorization of a sovereign government in civilian clothes and/or uniforms without the distinguishing insignia required by the laws of war. Their use of civilians in civilian vehicles as human shields against military attack is also a grave war crime punishable by fines, imprisonment, and death. Any combat or other news photographer is required to know they are liable to be injured or killed without recourse by any or all direct or indirect fire targeting the military personnel and equipment they accompany.
You sound like ISIS spokesperson. ("Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people")
Perhaps a PR job awaits you there.
LOL !
Repeat this 1000 times and you'll believe it is true.
Perhaps you should consult the official Kiev terminology. It is not "combat" or "war" but Anti Terrorist operation. In order to be effective propaganda must be uniform, and you are wavering.
KGB thug supporters on FR. Sad.
Stop it with the humor! Are you a supporter of ISIS?
I am against islamofascists and their enablers. Sadly that puts me in disagreement with some of the Freepers.
I can’t read Cyrillic.
